While on my honeymoon (!) I coincidentally met two editors from Bride's Magazine.

I told them how I bought fabric at the fabric district (NYC 7th Ave 30's 40's) and hired a seamstress from Brooklyn to make my wedding dress to order, with only silk and costly lace, for $750.

They told me they couldn't publish an article about buying fabric and hiring seamstresses.

@arodriguez.romero: i think they underestimate how many people might be interested in that article. here's one. although frankly i'm planning on eschewing the dress altogether in favor of jeans and some kind of hot vintagey blouse. mostly because the idea of wedding dress shopping seems even worse than swimsuit shopping.

@Stung is the Ursa Mater: yeah funny thing - Bride's knew readers would be interested in the "how" of the seamstress/wedding dress project.

They couldn't because their advertisers would then boycott advertising in that issue, or subsequent ones.

i am planning a wedding and finding the whole process stressful and depressing. i haven't bought any magazines but i've looked at a few websites and they are just reinforcing the stereotypes of everything my parents want my wedding to be which i am trying to avoid. i'm in my thirties but i'm an only child and my somewhat controlling family has already guilt-tripped me out of both the elopement i had originally planned and the tiny, casual, romantic beach getaway i came up with as a compromise to include more people. i have a new baby, i don't have the time or energy to worry about a million and one vendors and blah, blah, blah, but i don't want to just go to the courthouse and have done with it with no ceremony, either. the whole situation is actually bothering me far more than i would have thought it would a few years ago; i thought i wasn't a wedding-type person at all, turns out i am, just not the traditional variety. i do care about my wedding, to the point that i had a little fantasy about burying my overbearing mom in a pile of giant white tasteless wedding cake and leaving her there. i could see her little keds kicking so clearly.

When I got married I made a lot of decisions against my own wishes to please my relatives and in-laws. I felt resentful for years after. (jeez now I am remembering...grrr)

@arodriguez.romero: @snotnosepunk: yeah, i don't want to deal with a lot of minutiae or formality, and i especially don't want to look back at my wedding day with resentment or regret. the ursa pater and i have been torn on how to handle this, as i had a rocky relationship with my family for years but want my parents to have a close relationship with their only grandson, and they have offered us cold cash to help with expenses, which is tempting as fuck with a new baby in this economy. but we're thinking of telling them we're going with the little beach getaway and NOT taking their money, and if they're going to fuss about the limited guest list again then they can take it up with our dust because option #3, as far as we're concerned, is

All of the things Sadie pointed out about wedding mags are silly and ridiculous but the thing that actually pisses me off is how little diversity there is in the features.

You think fashion week is bad??? Apparently only one woman of color gets married in any given season. It's incredibly upsetting.

The best part of the wedding planning process was throwing away the four wedding magazines that I had (the husband wanted to burn them, but then we decided against it) and then getting tipsy and reading "The Knot's Guide for the Groom" which was some 150-odd guide for grooms on how to manipulate their future wife. It included a heinous diagram of a woman's "brain" with sectors for various aspects of wedding planning...and that was it.

Because all brides' brains are CONSUMED by wedding planning. Sheesh.

When my friend got engaged last year, I bought some of these and also got her a subscription to Brides. Why did I feel the need to read them? Well, I never had before, and I was curious, and I am sort of a magazine whore.

She found some good stuff in em, but more than anything, we agreed that looking through wedding magazines always makes us crave cake. I'm starting to crave it now, actually.

OMG ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS MADE THE CAKE IN FIGURE 2.

She rocks, and her cakes are delicious. She will make you one with traditional flavors if you ask ;)

Sorry, I get really excited over her publicity, though i get the idea you're not fond of her flavor combo. Personally if I ever get married, I'm having her make her apple spice cake w/ pumpkin frosting. I've had it, and it's delicious.

@Flackette is a Red State Elitist: I LOATHE all shower games. I think it is even worse at baby showers. If you're old enough to get married or have a child, you're too old to be wrapped up in toilet paper or other such nonsense. And no social event should be non-alcoholic- that's crazypants.

@georgina: a friend just had a baby shower (which I was unable to make), but i heard from a friend that did attend that it was super-awkward since no one else has kids. they couldn't even have alc there since the momma-to-be isn't even of age! boo.

Like Carrie Bradshaw, I am missing the bride gene, so I just skimmed through this post on my way to the comment box.

The reason I had to get to the comment box was the Brideshead Revisited reference. I'm reading it right now and have been surprised at how thoroughly I've enjoyed it so far (page 75, so please, no major spoilers!) I find Charles Ryder's father hilarious and was quietly cracking up on the subway this morning over his willful Americanization of his guest Jorkins.

Any Waugh-readin' Jezzies out there? Please share your thoughts, impressions, preferences about filmed adatations, etc.!

@MockMyWorld: this is one of my favourite books but I have to say that I loathe both adaptations. I know it's apparently sacrilege to deny ITV's adaptation with Jeremy Irons and Andrew Anthony in the 80s (which is the better of the two just) but I think it misses most of the major themes of the book in favour of boosting the Oxford part of the book which is really very minor over all. Otherwise, I always had a soft spot for Anthony Blanche. ps is it Ryder's father or Sebastian's you mean, I don't actually remember Ryder's dad.

@emilyanne: Ryder's (I haven't even met Sebastian's dad yet, except via hearsay). I kind of love his deadpan, passive-aggressive little mind games and his total inability to bow to the sentimental conventions of fatherhood. Sounds like he might not make any further appearances in the book, then...bummer!

I've heard gripes about both adaptations too, like that the miniseries is glacially paced and that the movie is crap altogether, but I still can't wait to see them as soon as I'm done with the book. Anything involving either Sir Larry or Emma Thompson couldn't be all bad, could it?

@rocknrollunicorn: Oooh, have not read that one! I've read Vile Bodies and A Handful of Dust previously, though, and the tone of Brideshead already seems different to me somehow. More sweetness alongside the wit, maybe. Whatever it is, I really like it.

@MockMyWorld: no they're not all bad. I don't mind the glacial pace of the miniseries, its only slow by today's hyperactive standards. What I dislike is that the novel's central theme is conversion and Catholicism and the miniseries all but ignores it while the film gets it entirely wrong. Both Larry and Emma are good though. Hmm I may have to reread.

BR is one of my favorite books of all time.

@BoozeInMyBlood[Formerly ForgetfulBitch]: The piping doesn't look too difficult - I mean, it's not flowers. I think you could just use a fine tip and draw the shapes without too much tragedy.

Of course, with me, I'd have to make four batches of piping frosting and practice on wax paper before I got anywhere near the cake.
