    Millennials think they'll be good employees?! Ha! Tell that to all the college interns we've fired since they couldn't wrap their mind around "you should be here at the time you are scheduled to start."
    That goes double for any of the ones who had their MOMS call to try and get their jobs back.

    OK, no coach should beat/brutalize a child. Ever.


    But, I have sympathy for coaches who work with elite athletes and appear like monsters in the public because they are never-take-no-for-an-answer-push-you-until-you-nearly-break coaches. That's their job. They work with the best, who won't settle for second place. The biggest problem with gymnastics, as a whole, is that this level of coach becomes necessary in an elite gymnasts life at FAR TOO YOUNG an age. Mental trauma often ensues. Physical trauma (beyond the trauma inherent in reaching the top of the podium) should never, however.

    @sportz.star: The irony was during the Olympics, one of the color commentators was commenting how "unfocused" and "the lack of dedication" of the women's gymnastic teams were now that Karolyi and his cronies no longer had a death grip they used to on training programs...and how much better the old days were.

    @Athaliah: Well, part of the "death grip" was that all the top athletes had to train together a good part of the year -- shared misery, experience, and goal. Even in individual sports I totally support that. The Jamaican sprinters train together. The American sprinters don't talk to each other. Results from 2008 say, Jamaica 1, USA 0.

    @broad: Given that "In God We Trust" is on U.S. money, it is highly unlikely that the Court will consider it religious entanglement. The phrase is probably considered to have historical significance.

    @broad: Even if you think it's BS, and I don't wholly disagree, it's a total loser of a case. It's been well established (by SCOTUS) that recognizing a supreme being is not endorsing religion. And, since no one in Indiana HAS to have it say "god" on their license plate, it's OK. The logic and legal explanations are often exasperating and unclear, but "In God We Trust" is here to stay in the US.

    @broad: If you like that part of it you'll really like the fact that the "In God We Trust" plate is the standard plate, you have to request the plain one, which is the exact same plate but with a giant empty space where the text would be.

    @whats_in_a_name: It's not the standard plate. You have to ask for the "In God We Trust". My new plate I had to get this year is just the plain one and I didn't have to request it.

    @whats_in_a_name: Now see, when I got my plate last month, they asked if I wanted the "In God We Trust" plate at no extra.(I of course said "NO!" And the regular plate doesn't have the flag on it, but it's still not attractive. Just blue and white.) Maybe that's the benefit of living the largest blue section of a red state. Heh.


    MY issue with it, because I know I didn't clarify, (and I'm also responding to y'all a few days later) is not that they're printing it on the plates. That's fine if you want it. My issue is that it should be a vanity plate like any other. Why should the state give up a revenue stream just so people can have "God" on their plate!?? It's crap.

    Ooh (long brewing) scandal! I'd been hearing rumours about the Karolis for over a decade (they had a school up in my neck of the woods). Between these stories finally surfacing plus that scary PBS doc about East German Olympians suffering years later from their state-sponsored steroids, I think the price some pay for Gold is too damn high.

    @Yes.We.Did.Dagnabbit.: @ejc.yippee.skippee!: I think Bela Karolyi is a bad person. I don't care if he coached lots of winners. He was tyrannical, controlling and cruel to the children he coached. It made me really mad that NBC used him as a commentator this past summer.

    @Yes.We.Did.Dagnabbit.: My stepdaughter attended his "camp" in Houston a couple of summers ago. Her mother is obsessed with the girl being in gymnastics, to the point that she's in the gym about 20 hours a week. Is she on an Olympic track? NO. Is she underweight? YES! My hubby and I were dead-set against her going to the camp (she was 10 at the time) but we were overruled...again. I think he's a dungeonmaster.
