Gay Marriage Bill Fails In New York
Elle's "Danger Man" Wants Us To Go On Marriage Strike

A bright spot, however: the DC council voted to legalize same-sex marriage.

C'mon, NY! You're losing points while DC is gaining.

I have a gay friend who contends that this issue would have much better luck if they went the route of civil unions, but I tend to think there are enough out there that are opposed to equal rights. Also, to me thats a question of semantics- if me and my atheist boyfriend head to city hall and stand in front of a justice of the peace, we'd walk away with a "marriage" certificate as thats the legal term for civil unions. ugh.

It's more a question of how many are worried about re-election next year. (Senators who voted against it, that is.)

Some people seem to contend that this is primarily a religious issue and if it was just called civil union every gay in America could get one. But given that we've seen this year a justice who refused to marry an interracial couple, I think that there's plenty who just don't think gays should have rights.

And that is still a piecemeal solution with people having different rights in different states.
We need a supreme court case. That's the only real solution.

*I work for a member of the state legislature, and you wouldn't believe the number of calls we've gotten urging him to vote against the measure, despite the facts that he's voted for it every single time it's come up, he's been out in front on the issue since well before it was a hip thing to do so, and his sister is a lesbian at whose wedding he officiated. I mean, come on.

Other than that, I cosign everything written below. People don't like feeling uncomfortable and yucky, which is why their discomfort and bigotry shouldn't be in control of deciding basic civil rights.

Methinks we need more a movement to redefine what marriage means.

All these people mask their hate with religion; it's absurd. One that note: Why does religion have any bearing on any decisions made in a country?
Atheists and gays and atheistic gays need to usurp North America. 'Tis the only way I can see an end to this absolutely, utterly FUCKING STUPID discrimination.

Dear executive director of the New York State Catholic Conference,
I do not think this word "discrimination" means what you think it means.
Signed,
Bite me.

Yeah, I like the original version better.
This is all relative, but at least it got to a vote in NY State. That's a semi-good thing, right?
I won't be eloping to NY anytime soon. If I ever marry, it will be with a license from an equality state.

If Iowa ever repeals it through a vote of bigoted corn farmers, I'd be screwed, though, since I'm in the middle of the country. Any of those Upper Midwest states got a shot?
12/02/09
So. Uh... my point is that the Iowans I know may not be smearing themselves with body glitter and gay marrying each other, but they sure as heck aren't the type to make a fuss if other people want to.
Let's also not forget Minnesota, which is always a political wild card state (they brought us Paul Wellstone AND Michele Bachmann! Whee!) and might just legalize gay marriage so that people don't forget about them all nestled up against Canada.

This graph is frightening. Only a dozen states would NOT approve it if left to peeps under 30 (mine being one, of course). None would if left to those over 65.

I'm just so, so tired of sitting back and listening to otherwise decent people rationalize their bigotry. For far too long, this country has given elected officials, religious leaders and civilians a platfrom from which they could espouse their hatred. And the excuse for this permissiveness is always that everyone is entitled to their political and moral beliefs. But here is the problem: intolerance and bigotry are not political positions, they are a disease and one that violates so much of what I thought this country stood for. It makes me sick to my stomach.
My uncle and his partner have been together since 1950 and in that time, they have stayed together through battles with cancer, births of children and deaths of loved ones. They have more of a marriage than most heterosexual couples I know, and yet, have fewer rights. Meanwhile, my aunt is on her 7th engagement (currently, to two men). Sanctity of marriage, my foot. At the risk of sounding painfully naive: it's just not fair.

It's shameful that the only person willing to speak out and "explain" his no vote is someone like Diaz. The rest could only whisper. They should be embarassed. And then they should be voted out of office.
