I don't feel bad for this women. I feel bad for all the other athletes who were clean who lost to her. It's not like those athletes will all get the chance to compete at the Olympics again. They worked thier whole lives to get to that pinnacle.

@bluebears: I believe everybody who ran against Marion and came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th were moved up and given the proper medals when she was stripped. I don't think that's nearly as good as standing on the medals podium and having that medal put around your neck, but, I guess it's the best they can do under the circumstances.

I remember being so proud of Marion. I actually believed her when she said she never took steroids; even argued with people about it. I felt so let down and really angry. I don't look at track and field the same way anymore. I think I'll tape Oprah today, just to see what she says. Hope it's more than "how was the food in prison."

@mslewis: so many people felt betrayed by her. and what about the other US women who didn't make the team and even get to go? or lost to her in the heats leading up to the race? i mean not to say those people would've won but...it just shows what a cascading effect that kind of cheating has on all those involved not just the 2nd place finisher.

@emagoo: @nevin: @bluebears: EXACTLY.

It isn't as much about the steroids as it is for the lying to the grand jury...however, that kind of cheating is ASS and speaks volumes to one's character. Bluebears is right - people work legitimately hard all their lives for a chance at what she stole from them. They'll never get that chance again. She sucks.

@ElleL: That "poor woman" cheated, and then committed perjury. Yeah, the other guys should go to jail too (I cannot wait for Barry Bonds' court date), but she made her bed and deserved what she got.

You know, there are some crimes that just don't seem to deserve prison time. I don't know. As a parent I strive to give appropriate consequences to my child's bad behaviour, consequences that are relevant. Lying is wrong, steroids are wrong--but prison wrong? It just doesn't make sense to me.

@nevin: Yes, okay, I guess lying to a Grand Jury is fairly heavy. Still...I have always felt that prison should be reserved for violent criminals who are a risk to have in general society. I could be totally off base, it just doesn't sit right with me.

@jfk1624: yes but there have to be consequences for lying under oath. It's harsh I agree but as a society we have to show that lying in a court of law cannot be tolerated. Its the basis of our criminal justice system.

@LoveNoelG: That's a good question. I think if you commit a crime--any crime--you need to be punished. But I also think the punishment needs to (sorry to be cliche) fit the crime, and I actually don't think that prison is appropriate for most crimes that are committed. I think community service should be part of it, I think restitution should be part of it--but I think prison time should be used not as punishment but to remove dangerous people from society. Listen, the prisons in the US are overcrowded, and with the number of people who reoffend, it is clear that prison time is not the answer--or at the very least, not the best answer. Perhaps I should offer this disclaimer--I'm a Canadian, and our views on crime and punishment are admittedly fairly removed from yours as Americans.

@LoveNoelG: I'm not sure that prison is necessarily suitable for them either. Of course, drug dealers cause harm to other people, so I see that maybe not as a violent crime but as a crime that put others in great danger. Stealing, though.... meh. (on most but not all cases)

@jfk1624: Agreed. Moreover, prison time is meted out unevenly and, in my opinion, irrationally. I was just reading on People.com this morning that Jennifer Hudson's brother-in-law could have had his parole revoked for a June arrest for possessing crack cocaine. His violent history indicates that his drug use has escalated to the point where he's become a danger to other people. If he had been behind bars, perhaps Hudson's family would still be alive. Meanwhile, Jones, who has never threatened or been violent with anyone, ends up behind bars because of drugs. Something is seriously fucked up here.

@cannotedit: @PhillyLass: Exactly, to both of you. I was torn about the question of drug dealing because while it isn't a violent crime in and of itself, it is definitely a crime that could easily become violent. That being said, I'm of the school of thought that drugs (yes, all drugs, yes, I know this is controversial) should be decriminalized and regulated, too...so I guess my views might be considered a little radical...

@jfk1624: I don't think you can draw a line at violent crime though. White-collar criminals get enough breaks that you can't remove the possibility of prison time. Jeff Skilling never raised a hand to anyone and is rightly sitting in jail right now.

@emagoo: No, I don't really think he should be in jail. I guess I'm not really wording this very clearly. I don't think that prison time itself should be the punishment--I think it should be used to keep society safe from violent criminals. I would be far happier if he spent time as a labourer, making minimum wage with no chance of a raise.

@the_decider: with how crowded things are in prison, it's completely ridiculous to lock someone up for lying when the lie did not cause any serious (meaning physical/fatal) harm to anyone other than yourself. it's all well & good to be honest in sports, but really? prison?
