That's not all: the anonymous scribe also said he was modeling himself after the notorious killer Zodiac and even used the Zodiac's target symbol in his sign-off. Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine told CNN, "I do not believe there is a serial killer on the loose in Fayetteville." However, police do think that the letter was planted to confuse and misdirect the investigation for Touma's killer. They are currently investigating another solider who is studying psychological operations at Fort Bragg.

Until recently, Touma and the unnamed soldier had been stationed in Bamberg, Germany, and according to the Fayetteville Observer, a friend in Germany says that Touma was recently engaged, but that the friend had never known the fiance's name. Below is the letter published in the Observer, taking responsibility for Touma's killing. As the reader of too many true crime books, I agree with the Fayetteville police: I don't think it's the work of a serial killer, but it's certainly hinky.

<![CDATA[ Remember Maria Lauterbach, the pregnant...]]> Remember Maria Lauterbach, the pregnant Marine who was murdered and incinerated by her baby's father? Well the story of deceased Spc. Megan Lynn Touma, 23, is sounding eerily reminiscent of the Lauterbach tragedy. She was seven months pregnant, and was identified yesterday, though her body was discovered on Sunday at a Fayetteville, North Carolina motel. According to the AP, "Authorities say they are investigating [Touma's] 'suspicious' death." We'll be following this story as it develops. [AP via MSNBC]

<![CDATA[CBS News has noticed something others have...]]> dawna41108.jpgCBS News has noticed something others have been saying for months: missing women of color don't get any press. "When Laci Peterson became the symbol of maternal homicide in the mass media and in the law books...it put a white face on the horrendous crime of maternal homicide," Lindsay Goldwert writes for CBS, "In reality, that face is actually young, and often, black." Goldwert points out that the deaths of women like Dawna Wright, pictured, who was shot by her boyfriend in June of last year, go largely unreported in comparison to a Laci Peterson or a Maria Lauterbach. Statistics show that black women have a maternal homicide risk about seven times that of white women. In addition, "Black women ages 25-29 are about 11 times more likely as white women in that age group to be murdered while pregnant or in the year after childbirth." [CBS News]

<![CDATA[ Marine Cesar Armando Laurean, the suspect...]]> Marine Cesar Armando Laurean, the suspect accused of killing pregnant fellow Marine Maria Lauterbach, has been apprehended after more than three months on the run. Lauterbach went missing just before Christmas. In early January, her body and that of her fetus were found burnt in a makeshift grave in the backyard of Laurean's home near Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where both Lauterbach and Laurean served. Laurean was nabbed earlier this week in Tacambaro, Mexico, with ten pesos in his pocket, reports MSNBC. Lauterbach brought rape charges against Laurean last spring, which he denied, and subsequently he was never prosecuted for them. Laurean is currently awaiting extradition to the U.S. [MSNBC]

<![CDATA[Missing Marine Found Dead; Likely Murderer Missing]]> Brace yourself for this Monday morning tale of woe: the remains of 20-year-old Maria Lauterbach, the pregnant Marine who had been missing since before Christmas, have been found in the backyard of her accused rapist, fellow Marine Cesar Armando Laurean. The burnt body of Lauterbach and her unborn child were found in a makeshift grave on Saturday. (It is unclear if Lauterbach's pregnancy was a result of her alleged rape.) Laurean, who has since skipped Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he and Lauterbach both served at Camp Lejeune, admitted to burying Lauterbach, but claimed in a note that Lauterbach slit her own throat. Which would explain the blood splattered all over the walls of his house! Oh, by the way, this piece of shit was also married. His wife, reports CBS News, is said to be "heartbroken".

asshole11408.jpg Lauterbach filed the rape charges against Laurean (pictured) in April, and according to the Washington Post, Maria was harassed so badly in the meantime by her fellow Marines that she had to move off-base. Neither Lauterbach nor Laurean was reassigned to a different base after these charges were filed, because, according to military authorities, they were on "friendly terms" and Maria was ostensibly protected by a military order issued in May and renewed three times since then.

As has been reported before 20% of female veterans who seek care from the VA hospital showed symptoms of military sexual trauma. CBS News notes that there have been "complaints from female service members that the male-dominated chain of command did not take their allegations seriously," and the reticence of the Department of Defense to get involved in the Jamie Leigh Jones rape case further implies that the U.S. military does not care about the safety of the women in its employ.

Laurean is currently still missing, and though there have been sightings of him in Louisiana, none have been confirmed. Doddering local sheriff, Ed Brown, who, when Maria first went missing, implied that she had simply run away, had this to say about Laurean when asked what the Marine was capable of: ""Based on what I saw in that grave, anything."

<![CDATA[ "Ms. Lauterbach is dead, and has been buried...]]> "Ms. Lauterbach is dead, and has been buried here in Onslow County. The suspect in the case is the marine accused by her for assaulting her." — Direct quote from the Onslow County sheriff on CNN, concerning Maria Lauterbach, the pregnant marine who has been missing since mid-December. A key witness came forward with the information about Lauterbach, though authorities say her buried body has not yet been found.

<![CDATA[Mom Of Missing, Pregnant Marine Says She Was Victim Of Sexual Assault By A Superior]]> Remember yesterday evening's speculation that missing pregnant 20-year-old Marine Maria Lauterbach's disappearance might have something to do with a sexual assault? Well documents have surfaced today quoting Maria's mother alleging that her daughter was the victim of sexual assault at the hands of a superior officer. To recap: Maria's family last heard from her on December 14; they reported her missing on December 19th after they were unable to reach her. Maria's cell phone was found on the side of a road near her military base, North Carolina's Camp Lejeune. There was "suspicious activity" on Lauterbach's bank account on December 24. Oh, and of course, Maria was scheduled to testify as a witness to some sort of incident that took place at Camp Lejeune.

In addition, Lauterbach wasn't just pregnant, she was almost to term. Her due date was January 8. Jacksonville's Sheriff Ed Brown told reporters, "You pray that she's alive." We certainly do.

<![CDATA[What Did Missing Marine Maria Lauterbach Witness Before She Mysteriously Vanished?]]> Missing white girl! The name is Maria Lauterbach and she's a pregnant marine, age 20. She's been missing since December 14. Her cell phone was found at the front gate of her base, Camp Lejeune, on December 20. On Christmas Eve, her bank account showed "suspicious activity." Her blue Hyundai just turned up abandoned at a Jacksonville, Florida bus station. If she's alive, she's due any day now. What's the deal? According to the Marine Corps Times, she was a witness in some unnamed "incident" that took place on base and was scheduled to testify. (Also according to the Marines Corps Times, there are a lot of uncloseted gays in the military, including one with a "secret porn past") But back to Maria: what did she see? Think it involved an assault of some kind? Sexual, perhaps?

I'm just speculating, of course. I searched Nexis for clues — so resourceful, I know — and came up dry. In the meantime, her mother is very worried and the details of the case will no doubt become more sordid and disturbing. Although she could also be on some secret prenatal yoga retreat. Wouldn't it be nice if that happened in these cases once in awhile?
