    I read the Kinsey biog and he believed that there are no cut and dried labels about sexuality, and that it is a fluid thing.


    His system said that people went from +5 hetero all the way to +5 homo and everything in between. He also believed that most people lived in the grey areas between these points, and that even if someone was born +5 homo they could, in theory, turn to +5 hetero or vica versa.


    I know for sure that my sexual preferences have shifted and changed over time, from being mad about boys, to slightly interested in girls, to obsessed with them, the all the way back again. I don't know who I'll end up with for the rest of my life and like Lindsey don't see why I should have to label myself as straight, gay, bisexual, or any other stupid name. People can be beautiful and caring and I could fall in love with any one of them such is they mystery of life.

    I'm so sick of the discussion of Lohan being all "oh, she's gay now!" from some and "oh, she doesn't have the courage to come out as a lesbian for realz!" from others. THAT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE SHE'S NOT. I hate how bisexuality just gets completely left out of the discussion of her. Why is it just "oh, she -was- straight, but now she's dating a woman so GAY GAY GAY"? No, probably bi all along. Arghghghgh. Pet peeve of mine.

    Sometimes I read things like this and I am amazed at how confused our terms still are about sexuality, even among people who are totally gay-positive. (Maria, let me be clear - I'm not criticizing how you wrote this, just I find it interesting.) I mean, just that one line about Lindsay Lohan being neither gay nor straight would provoke a massive discussion among many lesbians I know. And then the issue LaComtesse brings up re whether sexuality is a "choice" is a whole 'nother can of worms.

    @PilgrimSoul: But I need a label! I can't function without a label! It's like reading a blog post without any tags! I need to be able to casually introduce my sexuality into a dialogue, and saying "Hi, I'm Sarah, and most of my relationships have been with women but at the moment I'm carrying dick-spawn and I went to a women's college and I don't like the Indigo Girls and I have fantasies about Maria Bello and Jon Stewart" usually stops a conversation dead in its tracks.

    @exelizabeth: If it was ever there to begin with. As I understand it, there's a lot of sadness among the bisexual community re: biphobia and bi-invisibility. We are not well understood, and are subject to fear and prejudice from both the heterosexual and homosexual communities. Alas!

    @exelizabeth: While I do see that side of it, it was still so out of character for her and I kind of feel like this statement:


    "...he told me what a fan he was. He had most of my albums from the very first one. What? This didn't sound like a gay hater, much less a preacher."


    is what rubs me wrong. Lots of people are fans of artists that are gay even though they don't support gay marriage. Just because you buy her album doesn't make you any less homophobic.


    Though yes, I respect the fact that she let her voice be heard, like she always does, I just don't really agree with some of her reasons for supporting him.

    @exelizabeth: Mostly I just thought to myself, eh, she's a celebrity, not a political thinker, and while I'm glad he is at least not afraid of contaminating himself with the lez-ness via her albums privately, perhaps I will blow him a kiss when he uses his position to publicly advocate for such respectfulness.
