I am fascinated by Maori culture. The haka, the tatoos, etc are just amazing. Not to mention the fact that I don't think an ugly Maori exists. I became friends with a Maori co-worker and she was beautiful outside and in. Parties at her place were amazing; huge guys with these amazing tats and Amazon women who were goddesses. I've promised that I'll visit her family in NZ so I just have to reconcile myself with being in a plane for that many hours.
@topsy: Although I know you're being positive, you're idealising or fetishising the Maori a bit there. 'I don't think an ugly Maori exists'? Of course they do. The Maori ethnic group comprises all kinds of people, beautiful, ugly, clever, stupid, kind, mean, hard-working, lazy, everything in between, just like everyone else. They're just... people. Your co-worker is awesome because she's an awesome person, probably from an awesome family, not because she's Maori.
@Sarah Dove: Thanks for telling me what I meant. I feel the same way about black people that I do about Maoris. I think black people are wonderful and beautiful in every way. There might be ugly, stupid black folks, but I've never met them.
@topsy: The plane ride's not so bad, so long as you fly out of LAX and have an overnight flight. It really does (no pun intended) fly by if you're on a decent airline. I flew Qantas and though it was quite crowded on the flight out, the flight back was honestly at least half empty, giving me and my friends our pick of seats and entire rows to spread out across. They have a little monitor built into the seat too that has about 7 channels of movies and another 5 channels or so of TV shows to keep entertained throughout the flight if you're unable to sleep.
Like I said, they made it quite non-painful for me. Then again, I found an off-season special which got me round-trip tickets for only $700, something that is likely impossible to find with fuel costs as they are nowadays.
@topsy: I'm not talking about what you meant, I'm talking about reality and humanity. Maori people are just normal people. They're not some super-race! I'm glad you've had good experiences with the ones you've met, that's lovely. I've also known lovely Maori people, including students and colleagues in the school where I work. They're my equals and my compatriots. And I believe the majority of people, of whatever ethnic group, are decent folks with admirable qualities as well as natural flaws. I just don't think it makes any sense to idealise a particular ethnic group the way you say you do Maori or black people. Would you accept that there are ugly and/or stupid people in any other ethnic groups? What makes the difference, to you?
Is this in New Zealand? They make great "game" faces, and I love the Maori dances soccer and rugby teams do before games to psych out the opposing team. Too cool.
@Benevolent_Dictatrix (patently absurd): Ha, that was my first thought as well. It's the same face that I made the first time I saw the opening dance number.
@mbprice: Do all natives of New Zealand resent being called kiwis? Or is it a Maori thing? I was under the impression (from folks I know from NZ) that they didn't mind or even embraced it. I could be totally, ignorantly wrong though. It's been known to happen.
@LindsayC: doctoral hilarity ensues: I wasn't really thinking of it in terms of resentment. More in the sense that Kiwi is a really silly-sounding word for someone who looks like they're about 3 seconds away from chopping you in half!
