Why Aren't Male Celebrities Expected To Stay Slim? |

But on Russell Crowe, I'm disappointed he felt he had to play the journo in State of Play as a slob. James McEvoy, who played the role in the Brit miniseries, was neat and tidy, and definitely more attractive.

You're completely ignoring the fact that even for serious actresses like Hillary Swank there is tremendous pressure to stay thin and look sexy. You're also ignoring the fact that actresses are expected to sell their sex appeal in Maxim while actors aren't.
Can you come up with a leading lady (not charecter actress like Kathy Bates) who isn't thin? I can't.
Blaming the women is very short sighted. I'm sure some are using their sex appeal to make a quick buck (Megan Fox), but actresses are also just expected to be sexy if they want to work.
Look at the last few years worth of Vanity Fair covers. It isn't a T&A magazine, but almost every actresses is posed like a pin-up and only Brad Pitt gets the same treatment. Nicole Kidman isn't trying to make a career out of her sex appeal, but that's still the way she is expected to promote her films. [www.vanityfair.com]

I expect them most hairless.
I expect washboard abs.
I expect them to workout every day.
If they expect it from me, I expect it from them.

I can't really imagine a female Seth Rogan- average face/chubby body but getting leading roles.
I think the standards for men are starting to get stricter. I have a feeling that Seth Rogan will keep his svelter body because it will open doors for him. But I'd rather see a wider variety of actresses than push all male leads into the same body type.

PS- This won't change.

Just wait, you'll see a 'nother set of beauty rules imposed. But by then, we'll all be considered old and useless by society and we just won't give a shit.

However, I am looking forward to seeing bone thin finish its long run someday; granted, when it does, I'll probably at that point be a skinny old lady...and still out of vogue. Sigh.

I hate the double standard because it keeps older, less in shape women from performing roles they would be perfect in, and allows men to be cast in any inappropriate role once they've established themselves. Couldn't we just start casting men and women for realism?

Ya. No. Okay. It's a stretch.

Russell Crowe as Robin Hood is a great example where older men get to play these parts that are SUPPOSED to be for younger men but for women, it gets switched. Remember 2006's The Omen starring Julia Stiles as mother to a 6 yr old turned devil? Yeah, she was 25 yrs. old at the time casted to play an older woman. Ug, whatever.

Stunning performances really...but there's a weird buzz/weird way which the roles are treated, even judged when an actress undergoes a physical transformation.

There are rare expections like Helen Mirren/Glenn Close/Meryl Streep, but they're women who have built careers on skill rather than appearance (and they're all stone foxes who are defying the ageing process anyway)

I don't fool myself into thinking guys who chat me up are doing so on the off chance I have a good personality. :)

There's obviously a double standard in Hollywood, but I think the names mentioned above, specifically Russell Crowe and Denzel, will continue to get parts no matter what because they are talented and their names guarantee a huge box office draw. And the same is true for established female stars, like Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett.
I think talent still counts for something in this case.

I won't link to them here, but there have been tons of headlines calling Russell Crowe out for gaining weight, accusing Seth Rogen of being on cocaine and shit like that to lose weight, and a myriad of other headlines that are cringe-worthy. And let's not forget all the attention paid on Rupert Everett's plastic surgery the other day.
Getting older in Hollywood regardless of gender must suck.

Not the same but Leonardo DiCaprio lets himself go a bit between movies and gets shit for it, although not as much as an actress would.

Yes, both men and women in Hollywood have constricting beauty ideals to live up to. But I argue that for women, such ideals of youth and body type directly affect the kinds of roles they get, if any.
