I had a really great anthropology lecturer once who gave a great lecture on how birthing rituals in the Western world are completely geared towards the doctor (read male, though not always), i.e. lady lying on her back for the doctor to see properly, when in many traditional cultures women have more comfortable non-medicalised births that are ergonomic for them, i.e. kneeling on the floor, gravity assisting birth. Seriously. There was a video and it looks SO much less painful and traumatic that what I am used to seeing. I'm thinking about making a trip to Peru for the birth of my first child.

My female, terrifying, and always stylish and proper orgo professor said this while doing the 'universal snorting coke sign'.

"CRYSTALLINE SILICA: Overexposure to respirable crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis, a form of
progressive pulmonary fibrosis. "Inhalable" crystalline silica (quartz) is listed by IARC as a Group I
carcinogen (lung) based on "sufficient evidence" in occupationally exposed humans and sufficient evidence in
animals. Crystalline silica is also listed by the NTP as a known human carcinogen. Some studies have not
demonstrated a cancer association and considerable controversy exists concerning the IARC and NTP
classification."
Lovely...exactly why I hate going into the plant where there is dust, sand, and talc flying around in the air.

And I remember reading a study about problems in fresh-water fisheries because the males had feminized genitalia.
To freak you out even more, my grandma - a surgeon that deals mostly with breast cancer, has been getting younger and younger patients (under 30) over the years with malignant tumors.
Another thing I was wondering about (I know there are jezziOB/GYNs here) is do we start delivering to our newborns these compounds through breast milk? Is there any evidence about developmental disruption due to these changes in additional hormone levels?

I had breast development as a baby and they switched mom and me to a diet without phytoestrogens and cattle hormones. Mom had to go to the boonies to get the poultry from local people and buy some weird meat that my grandma said.
I'd never expect it going as far a a period, though. :S
