I used to do stuff like shave my head and dye my hair purple, and as much as there are days where I'd feel a little more like me if I DID, I also realize that I do a job where I work with a certain swath of the public and at THIS job it would keep me from being taken seriously. That said, I don't think she needs to work out, loose weight, go blond, get lash extensions, wear hoochie makeup, etc, but if she wants to be treated like a professional, she is going to have to do what most of us do at work, which is to present ourselves in a professional manner. For her, that probably means getting a bit gussied up when she's on stage. What she wears on her days off is nobody's business.
What would be disturbing to me is if her producers DON'T help her to get put together, and sell her as some kind of novelty act: like she came out of the basement or something. I LOVE stories about people who realize their dreams later in life, and I'd love to see her grow a music career and not become a celebrity as the homely person who happened to have a good voice.

You might not have a problem with it, and in an ideal world neither would anyone else. There are plenty of people in the opera/music world who will, (but seriously? The Opera world is a terrifying place. If she wants to do actual opera she's going to have to get really, really tough, and reaaaaallly savvy pretty quick). She's enormously talented but without a lifetime of training, she's much more likely to end up doing popular classical music or musicals (more Sarah Brighton, less Jessye Norman). Her choices are going to be limited if her actual talent is the third most noticeable thing about her. The cache from being the dark horse from the Simon Cowell show will only really get her so far...

As for her appearance, a little smartening up is fine. I'd love to see her in a pretty solid color evening dress or a cocktail dress, with some makeup and hair. She has a lovely smile and sense of pluckiness about her. Brenda Blythen could play her in the movie.

She doesn't "need" a makeover to sing and wow people. Her eyebrows are not connected to her vocal cords. If she wants a makeover, she'll do it. It's not my business to tell her to get a haircut or a new outfit or whatever.

Why? Because if someone has lived to be middle aged without succumbing to the intense cultural pressure to conform to fascist beauty ideals we should give her a fucking medal and pay her NOT to get a makeover so as to light a torch for all of us sad, made over minions.
