I have always lamented not being able to buy clothing in Japan. I love so much of what they wear - okay I also hate a lot of stuff too - but even my skeleton wouldn't be able to fit in the sizes available.

I took a friend with me on one of my trips to Japan and had serious envy, she found the cutest pair of heels. Their largest size was still 3 sizes too small for me.

Next time I go back I might see about snagging some magazines. It is always fun to see how outfits are put together.

Lookbook and streetstyle is huuuge in Japan. Just hanging out near fashion week in Paris/London/NY, you see hordes of Japanese photographers and magazines getting photos of everyone-- not just the models.

@Beets.Go.On is the Fat Yogini: If you live in an area with a Japanese population (look around, you'd be surprised) you may be able to find them in specialty grocery markets or bookstores.

If you live in NYC, you can pop into Kinokuniya.

If you have the patience of job and generally do not overdraft your accounts, you can subscribe through J.List - I have issues with the site, but they are one of the only sources of export for a lot of things I like. They also have a tendency to be late on deliveries and do things like charge for two or three issues at once.

@Beets.Go.On is the Fat Yogini: Sasuga books (sasugabooks.com) as well as Amazon offer overseas subscriptions. Subscribing is way too pricey for me :(. It's pretty easy to find individual copies on ebay and other sites.

This "look-book" format is so much more interesting and informative than the Vogue/Elle/Marie Claire format. Every once in a while I get a yen for fashion and go buy a magazine, but the magazine usually leaves me feeling empty and dumb, and destroys my fleeting sartorial curiosity. I feel like these would satisfy my occasional fashion lust. I think I'm going to go change my clothes now.

You can read text on paper or the internet. The thing that sets actual magazines and newspapers apart is the visual layout. A fantastic layout does not transfer to the internet. You can't see it the way you can printed on paper. So, for magazines and newspapers to play down the one last card in their deck is just ridiculous to me.

I mean, let's be real, most people at newsstands pick up magazines based on the cover photo/art, not the cover lines or articles inside.

@DorothyZbornak: Agreed -- if I saw any of those classics styles on the newsstands, I'd probably be intrigued and want to buy it. I'm so absolutely bored by seeing the same concept again and again that I've stopped buying my usual magazines altogether. Well, that and "Cover Lies."

@DorothyZbornak: And that's what I don't get. If you're in a business that is all about change, why do you want your magazine to look exactly the same every single month? It should say something that a woman in the fashion industry has been wearing the same look and the same hair for 20 years. Being able to run a tight ship is nice, but when did this stop being about art?

@DorothyZbornak: really? grace is just as unimaginative as anna only her ideas cost more money. how many jumping models against gray backgrounds (which are inexplicably set in an expensive environment never featured) can you feature? hundreds apparently and dear old coddington will continue drumming them out.

also, when you appeal to a large group, innovation is usually a killer. as seen with most artists, when they try to go outside their comfort zone whether it's reese witherspoon doing a smart comedy (i.e. election) or kanye experimenting with auto-tune (i.e. 808s and heartbreak), their sales usually diminish. very few people succeed with providing the public with different things.

I recently stumbled across a Japanese magazine at an Asian market called Huge, which consistently portrayed men as aesthetically appealing and extremely fashionable. Many images contained thin male models wearing make-up, with long hair, arranged in sexual poses to promote products. This and similar publications serve to reaffirm my position that gender is a social construct.

@sydbarrettsaves, emissary of hell: One of my favorite things about male Japanese fashion was the hair barrettes. Giant plastic barrettes were all over the most fashionable guys, and they wore very interesting clothing, with lace and ruffley things. Of course, lots of guys weren't into that sort of thing, but low-cut shirts, long, pointy shoes and tight jeans were the high fashion of 2006. I thought it was great.

I also found it interesting that men would pretend to hit on each other, the same way that women do in America. Girls thought it was the greatest thing ever, and they did it for that reason. It was like a mirror of the American love of "lesbians".

@sydbarrettsaves, emissary of hell: In a way, it's really nice to look at very pretty men as well as pretty women. But I wonder how many eating disorders and all that crop up from the obvious ideal - thin, willowy and slouchy. I know my friends put a lot of pressure on each other to not be "fat", and would openly call each other so. They made one guy run after them because he was "too fat". It was clearly a bonding, jokey thing, but I'm sure some people were actually hurt by it.

The last time I tried to rock Japanese fashion, I thought it'd be fun to try a "layered jean" look I found on the internet. You cut the top of a pair of jeans and then wore that under a second pair of jeans. That? Did not go over so well in my small town suburban/urban high school.

    This looks MUCH more doable.

@MargaretMoony: I've been enjoying Lucky magazine lately because of this. (I got it automatically when another magazine went under.) No sex & diet advice, no navel gazing angst from the top 10%, just pages and pages of, say, messenger bags in all price ranges, or how to combine yellow and gray in several different silhouettes. Check it out.

Oh dear...nail art. That is one trend that I am perfectly ok with not seeing again. I went through an ill-advised nail art phase in elementary school, and let me tell you, no one should sport shamrocks, hearts and rainbows on their nails. It's like wearing an air-sprayed tee shirt on your hands.

At this point, I think a few of the ladymags deserve to go out of business. They are nothing but bullshit frankly - sexist, sizeist, racist bullshit. Maybe if a big one goes under, the rest will pull their heads out of their size 0 asses and take stock of what they have become. I don't buy them anymore and haven't for at least a year now.
