I like to pretend that the dude-dressed-up-as-a-sassy-fat-woman genre doesn't exist. Shhh. If you ignore them they might go away.

My friend and I think Tyler Perry is the new Jim Varney.

OK. Does anyone actually LIKE Tyler Perry movies? All I ever hear is people ripping into him but he makes money yes? Who are these people?

@mllej: The older generation of women in my family LOVE them some Tyler Perry movies. Most of them even watch House of Payne, though my grandmother says she watches it only to support black shows.

Yes, because supporting mediocrity is really doing us some good.

@mllej and andonthatnote: Oh yes. Before he was making movies, my relatives had all his plays on DVD. I can't avoid him. At home visiting family. At the braid shop. I had an old roommate who was always the odd-one out when we had movie night because she thought our movies were weird, so we agreed that we would let her pick the next movie with the understanding that we would hate it (no really, everything she wanted to see was on our absolutely under no circumstances list) and she made us watch it with her three times. (Okay, we let her because she was sensitive and would've thought we just didn't like her instead of the movie.)

I met her in the bathroom in a restaurant I was working at in Atlanta. It was just me and her and I walked out of the stall and go "Oh!" because quite frankly you don't expect to see Rudy Huxtable standing in front of you in a random restaurant bathroom. She smiled and was like "yea, hi" and then I left her alone because 1) I worked there, and because 2) nothing is worse than a weirdo bugging out over you in a bathroom when all you want to do is go back to your table and eat.

The same thing that made Lisa Bonet star in a graphic, blood-drenched sex scene with Mickey Rourke in Angel Heart when she was running way from her Cosby kid image as fast as her legs could take her.

As far as child stars go, I think playing a drug addicted sex worker in a movie is better than actually becoming one.

Also, that show will probably be in reruns for the rest of her life. Most of America sees her as perpetually 7 years old and innocent. I can see how that could spark a bit of rebellion.

Because she thought it would be more challenging, no?

Acting can be cathartic, it allows actors to explore other sides of themselves.

@Penny Plastic: Actors do say this, but in my general experience, actors are full of shit. So I'm not sure whether this is true or not. I think you're on the right track, but it has more to do with "career development" than it does with "catharsis."

@PilgrimSoul: Well, I don't know, because I don't know any actors. But I don't think it's necessarily bullshit. I, personally, could see myself using this medium to explore the darker parts of myself. I think that actors usually do it a lot.

Because she wanted to distance herself from her most known role? I mean, Rudy was the daughter of a doctor and a lawyer, right?

It's sad, though, because she can try to do anything she wants, she'll still always be Rudy Huxtable to me, holding a funeral for the fish toilet-side.

It reminds me of how in my highschool they asked for students not to write English essays about child abuse. It turned out nearly every second essay looked at the issue of sexual abuse. There seemed to be an ingrained macabre fascination with being a victim.
