Sarah Palin is like... everyone I know in North Dakota. I don't like her because I don't like her personality or her ideas. It has nothing to do with her being an "outsider", and honestly, I find it distasteful to try to play it that way. You are not unique, Sarah Palin, you are one of many. You just got the most airtime. #sarahpalin
McCain's comment about racism really affected me. It got me thinking about my own perceptions of people who are different from me. I'm Jewish, so I am interested in marrying someone who is Jewish. I doubt I could get serious with someone who wasn't, and I tend to have negative views of my relatives who marry outside the faith. Does that make me racist? I don't tend to bother about (and often don't even notice) skin tones, nationalities, or heritage, except in this one way. My cousin married a black, Southern Baptist, and my first question wasn't, "Did she tell us he isn't white?" the way some of the older generation was asking, but, "Did she tell us he isn't Jewish?" Does that make me racist? #sarahpalin
@coreybear66: It depends. Is it about finding somebody who shares your religious beliefs or is it about whether somebody is ethnically Jewish? I have actually seen both as issues to people and they are very different. #sarahpalin
@Lymed: Definitely sharing religious beliefs. "Ethinically Jewish" is such a loaded term. Although, I don't tend to mind dating guys who are raised Jewish and have drifted into Agnosticism. Then, at least we share basic morals and values. #sarahpalin
so the right sees Palin as an "outsider" (which supposedly we liberals hate) yet she is also "one of them", them being (according to themselves) the majority of americans. which, um, means she isn't an "outsider" at all. so which is it? #sarahpalin
Siegel's assertion that it is liberals who fear outsiders is laughable, considering how many rightwing nutjobs are still screaming about Obama not being "one of us" and insisting he doesn't have a US birth certificate. Dumbass, we liberals elected the most outside guy you could find! Half-black, half-white, single mother, father from Kenya, with a Muslim name...how much more outside can you get?
Siegel's theory stinks. Liberals are upset about Palin's POLICIES, not her gender. Just like we get upset about Obama's POLICIES, not his race. We leave the race fear to the conservatives. They are clearly so much better at it. #sarahpalin
"The white person who does not mind transacting business with a black bank clerk may yet be averse to accepting the clerk as his sister-in-law, and THIS IS NOT RACISM"
@willwriteforfood: Uh, well, the hypothetical white person doesn't mind that this rancid black person is daring to talk to him AND touching his money. Hello. #sarahpalin
@egg cream: Ah, I see, he tolerates the black person having a proper job, like him, and having the same fundamental rights as him... so that should be enough... accepting him into his family... not seeing the colour of his skin as a default by defintion... well, that's too much obviously.
The scariest thing to most of us is not the existence of Sarah Palin, or what she believes -- but the fact that there are people out there who believe she should hold any political office nevermind run for president. No, I don't particularly care for Sarah Palin, but what really astounds me is that there are people who stand behind her. Oh, and by the way, probably the best way not to be judged by your fellow country(wo)men is to not run for political office; or if you do, at least know a few things about how government and/or the world is run... #sarahpalin
Wait a minute, how can you "embody the American experience" and be a "true outsider" at the same time? Unless they mean a true outsider in the political system, and I find great difficulty in believing that you are THAT much of an outsider in the political system if you get picked to run as VP... The average liberal, who is not a politician and does not "embody the American experience" (what a crock that is, anyway!) is much more of an "outsider" in that respect. #sarahpalin
@Atomic Bowling: I think you need to stop with your educated, coastal jargon. Stop marring Real America! Don't you have an abortion to be getting? You work for Acorn, don't you!?!? Communist! Just like Nancy Pelosi!
Pretending to be a Republican is fun, you don't have to try to make sense! #sarahpalin
I don't get my liberal virtuous identity from being an insider, I get it from not hating people who aren't like me. Not even Sarah Palin. Unlike Sarah Palin. #sarahpalin
I honestly do not have a problem with Sarah Palin as a person. I have a huge problem with her as a candidate for national office. I don't care how much of an outsider she is, to be successful in politics you HAVE to know how Washington works. That cutesy hockey-mom bullshit (and what do you bet she's one of those moms you're stuck having awful awkward conversations with because they aren't up on politics or current events or new books or anything that's fun to talk about? ...ok, I guess I do have a bit of a problem with her as a person) is not a substitute for understanding the system and being able to use it. I hate that her main point of pride seems to be how little she knows about everything.

Defining racism: you're doing it wrong. #sarahpalin
@GreyCat: What? I thought the definition of non-racism was accepting minorities as capable of doing menial labor, but keep them the hell away from my family! Am....am I wrong???
