"It's something everybody goes through."
Uhh... not really. I'm all for exposing mentally and physically disabled people to variety of "normal" experiences, but I don't think I would put "unplanned pregnancy" on that list.

'I would also love it if Otto got a girlfriend pregnant. It's another experience everyone else goes through so why not him?
'The chances of him having a baby with Down's Syndrome are no more than anyone else but I know if he did get someone pregnant, everyone would have an opinion on it.'
That's wonderful, she wants him to have a non-Down girlfriend so that they can make babies together? Ugh. I could maybe understand her wanting her son to lose his virginity, but it seems selfish to want him to be in a relationship where one of the primary reasons is to produce babies. Ridic.

I don't know enough about Down Syndrome to answer this...but would he be capable of co-parenting a child? And even if he would, I still maintain it's weird that his mom wants him to impregnate a girl with no mention of his role as a parent.
Also - if you want to see people with Down Syndrome exploited (and I'm not suggesting any of you do), watch Crispin Glover's freaky movie called "What Is It." Conversely if you prefer not to see such exploitation I would avoid it. It's one of those things I wish I could un-see.

Sean Penn, fat suit equivalent, etc etc.

By the way, the disorder is now called "Down Syndrome." It's not possessive anymore, and using "Down's" to describe someone (Down's baby, Downs girlfriend, etc.) is kind of offensive. Jezebel got it right; the Daily Mail didn't. Quelle surprise.

First, I am really against parents crusading to get their children to have sex (regardless of whether the children want it or not). I just have this belief that parents should be someone you go to for advice or consolation, not your wingman.
Second, the fact that he has Down's Syndrome makes this seem like exploitation. Yes, I feel they should have a "normal" life, whatever that means but do I think that "normal" HAS to include sex? reproduction? No.
This just makes me sad.

Most people find someone they like with whom they share common experiences, and then have a relationship with them, have sex.
Plenty of people who are ugly, funny, tall, short, weird, challenged, or just plain strange have sex. Most people do no matter what. But most of them aren't seeking someone for sex only.
If they do, they pay for it. That's a normal life, in the sense of how you used the word "normal".

I think that most guys that age have some real difficulty though, and that his mom doing this makes him think he is somehow not going to have the struggle that most people do, and that's pretty wrong expectations for her to give him. I don't think most guys, even those with average or above average development, have an easy time finding sex without attachment at any age.
I get what you were saying.

Um, lady, you're doing it wrong. 'Everybody else' doesn't have their mom campaigning for them to get laid.

Otto says in the article that he wants a girlfriend so he can have sex- no mention of emotional connection or friendship with that sex. And he doesn't want to go to a sex worker. So from what I can see, what Otto wants is the validation of a girlfriend not the actual girlfriend. Which isn't that unusual for a 21 year old, but if his mom is going to get this involved, she really should be talking to him about what relationships are other than sex.
