LOVE Sarah Vowell. Her piece on June and Johnny Cash for This American Life remains one of my all-time favorite twists on the love story.

Of course, I love Starlee Kind as well. I have several of the remixes of "The Three of Us" on my iPod.

I think Public Radio becomes really personal for people - people tend to LOVE it or HATE it, and get really intense about their preferences (I will defend This American Life to the death, but want to throw my radio out the window when Prarie Home Companion comes on). I love that something basically designed to be inoffensive inspires such passionate responses.

I have a master's degree in history and have taken courses with horribly pretentious names like "The Politics of Cultural Despair," but I have no problem admitting that I would very much like to be Sarah Vowell when I grow up. Maybe it's a history-nerd thing, but the enthusiasm she has for all her topics is infectious -- like, YES! John Wilkes Booth's family is AWESOME! Charles Guiteau's inability to get laid at a free-love commune is HILARIOUS!

Maybe it's because I love telling people about the Weberite Heresy in backwoods colonial South Carolina a little too much. (But seriously, guys, this dude thought he was God and named his friend the Holy Spirit and they marauded around preaching their weird-ass beliefs and they mattressed anyone who didn't agree, as in they took mattresses and jumped people to death. Eventually, they were all locked up in cellars. It was AWESOME.)

I like her personal essays but find all her history writing beyond boring, maybe it's because I actually majored in history (in the ice age) but its all just so dumbed down. In my opinion.

I don't care what anyone says, I LOVE Sarah Vowell. I love everything about her, her self-deprecation and squeaky voice and all. Assassination Vacation on CD is divine. I love that she can talk about her nerdy love of history and her social awkwardness at the same time. The Partly Cloudy Patriot is one of my favorite books. I love how she wrote about her dad and her goin' hunting.

She is AHMAZING.

@PaintedTrollop: YES. Assassination Vacation was the first book I read of hers in full, and I am not someone who normally likes history books.(Obviously, history is important. The way most write about it is dry and tedious.)

@zagreb: Don't you love how the voices of public radio are completely OPPOSITE from commercial radio? Commercial radio is all about hyperactive, loud, booming voices. Public radio hosts always sound sedated, nerdy, and sometimes squeaky (like Sarah and Ira Glass). I LOVE public radio.

I would answer yes to that, having just spoken to a coworker who was surprised to learn that George Washington did not come over on the Mayflower.

@Samanthrax: I went on a little spree a few months ago, due to Jez praise. I really enjoyed the audio recording of The Partly Cloudy Patriot, but for the rest, her obsession with American history (espeically Lincoln) kind of did me in.

@Samanthrax: Wesaw her on Daily Show a while back and I ordered all of her books from the library and have been reading them as soon as my husband finishes them-- I really liked Partly Cloudy Patriot. I mean, not that I don't like Assassination Vacation, but PCP is essays so it's easier to ease into her style. And I haven't read Wordy Shipmates or Hold the Cannoli yet.

@eatsshootsleaves: Tom Wolfe is so annoying that there isn't enough annoyingness left in the world to describe him. Actually I don't know if this is as true in the US but it's worth noting that in the UK the most virulent book reviews are almost always women on other women.

@southernbitch: Me too, although I once got a great grade at grad school when we had to do journalism parodies and I picked Wolfe. He's my prime example of good journalists rarely if ever make good novelists while good novelists are generally shit journalists. The two exceptions to this rule: Orwell and Graham Greene, although arguably Greene's journalism isn't the same class as his fiction (this is why I'm ignoring Joan Didion because her novels can't touch her journalism)

@nwporn: true but I would argue what's the relevance in panning Sarah Vowell? It made Heffernan look rather petty as though she was jealous that Vowell had managed to do well and as though she was thinking 'I deserve her success, me, me...'
