My cousin is a Beth, and she is the shyest wee thing, but with a mean wild streak. Think she's just getting over her teenage rebellion now, which perplexed us all. So I'm going with Beth's are extremely complicated characters.
One of my closest friends is a Beth. She is the coolest most non judgmental person in the world. You could tell her any problem and she would just put her head down and think of a way to help.
I don't think I know any Beths in real life. The name is inextricably linked with Beth March for me. And not really in a bad way. I know she's too goody-goody for some people, but I always just see her as eternally frail and dreamy and childlike, and thinking about her is a surefire way to have a good cry.
Elizabeth is high on my list of girls' names, though. And the more it seems like it would annoy my MIL, the closer it gets to being my top choice. I can be like that. My MIL is so devotedly Irish that she holds my desire to spend some tourist time in London against me, and Elizabeth is too English for her. It's been thirteen years, but our truce is still an uneasy one.
I am a Beth turned Liz turned Birdie. To me, Beth is that super preppy girl who talks about you behind your back but isn't quite as shitty as some of the others. Birdie is my favorite diminutive of Elizabeth (well, okay, it's a diminutive of Betty which is a diminutive of Elizabeth).
I remember reading a book once where the girl went by Beth (I think) and she explained why Elizabeth was too formal and Lizzie too harsh...I can't remember it for the life of me, where are you fine lines!
I'm conflicted about Beth. Mostly I think of Beth S., the uber-biatch of my high school years and beyond. But then there is Beth H., an awesome girl I met in college. And of course Beth from Little Women - though she was never my favorite character by a long shot.

But I'd rather see the Gaiman instead of Howard Stern there as well, so ...
*shrugs*
Just watch it in the future. If you start seeing him where there are pictures of Gabriel Aubrey (Halle Berry's man), then perhaps there's a problem.

I love Beth Orton. I just had to go listen to She Cries Your Name before I could comment.

Are you thinking of Little Elizabeth from Anne of Windy Poplars in the Green Gables series?
