    @NefariousNewt a.k.a. General Awesomesauce: Nothing wrong with that. I do Greek folkdancing and it definitely is a workout; good for learning foot-coordination!

    @NefariousNewt a.k.a. General Awesomesauce: I Irish danced competitively for eight years. It's almost completely useless apart from the fact that it's good cardio, but it makes a great icebreaker and my friends think it's hilarious.

    @NefariousNewt a.k.a. General Awesomesauce: My dad wanted me to be a volleyball player; I ended up a belly dancer.

    I imagine it's tough to walk the line between encouraging your child toward something you're enthusiastic about and letting them discover their own interests.

    @NefariousNewt a.k.a. General Awesomesauce: I Irish step-danced for 10+ years! I was one of those kids who did everything for a year or two and then quit, but Irish dancing was the only thing I stuck with for that long. Just PLEASE don't make her wear those scary wigs.

    Edit: Oh, it also might've effed up my feet, though. I'm only 22 and I have budding bunions. :(

    @Eriu: I still can't decide if the wigs are more or less terrifying than all the ingested hairspray and nights of sleeping on foam rollers.

    @LaComtesse: I too have to out myself as a former Irish dancer. I might sometimes when drunk demonstrate my prowess at this in crowded bars to my husband's embarrassment. Maybe.

    My town didn't allow girls to play Little League. After you left tee ball, the girls had to play softball. That meant no uniforms or caps, just tee shirts, wearing shorts instead of baseball pants (because girls don't slide?) and being relegated to the secondary field while the boys used the one with bleachers and lights. I quit tee ball because the boys were spitting on me and stomping my hands when I reached down for the ball, and the coach wouldn't tell them to stomp.

    There's a zen parable about a master and his student where the master draws a line in the sand and asks the student how he would make the line shorter. The student then draws lines across the line making into three smaller lines. The master tells him, "Yes, that's one way, but how about this," and proceeds do draw an even longer line next to it.


    In other words, if you want to defeat your opponent, make yourself longer, don't chop them up. Which is my way of saying, I prefer Jez stay Jez and sing this young woman's praises here rather than trying to go out onto other sites and enforce your will there. Not to mention, you're just giving them hits...
