    I found a stack of Uttley's books at a thrift store a few months ago and snapped them up. I found them so pleasantly odd, and I'm delighted to know that the author was quirky, too. I can see both the comparison to Beatrix Potter and the definite differences between Uttley's and Potter's work.

    @QuicheLorraine:I inherited my dad's copies. I think if I re-read them, I would have some interesting thoughts re Little Grey Rabbit's domestic set-up. Hare is obviously gay but is Squirrel a drag-queen?

    Don't forget that however much Uttley disdains Beatrix Potter, she was a scientist also but was prevented from joining the Royal Academy because she was a woman. She was the first person to discover that a lichen was a symbiosis of algae and fungus.

    British artists, male and female, are universally the most competitive people I know, and I know a fair few of them, personally and professionally. Book launches over here are like a scene out of West Side Story, spontaneous dancing gang routines and all.
