You know what I love?

That, rather than say "hey, she's seventeen, and really busy, and she's got, like, a billion jobs and stuff, but she still makes time to READ BOOKS--and not precisely the MOST mainstream books, but books that you'd have to sort of find out about--and isn't that great?" this article mentions that she's allowed pictures of her to be taken, and that she dates older men.

Because, apparently, the only thing we're allowed to think about INRE Ms. Montana is her sex life.

Well, they're pretty good books Miley, and you should probably pick up Margaret Atwood fairly soon if you're enjoying the style and the ideas.

@februarymakeup: I'm no fan of hers, but I have to admit that I felt REALLY bad for her when I was watching The Soup a couple of weeks ago. Entertainment Tonight (or something of that genre) showed a clip of her and her (age-appropriate) boyfriend kissing on the beach, and the host COUNTED HOW LONG THEY KISSED. Horrible. Can we not let her have that little bit of normalcy?

I heard Johnny Depp say something like that on Letterman, and it kind of bugged me, as did him saying he doesn't watch ANY contemporary movies. I feel like that would be akin to me (a writer) not reading anything but the classics. At some point, don't you have a responsibility to your craft to know what else is being done in your medium?

Then again, he's a terrific actor so I guess it works for him.

@kad9k: I also agree with you. I've had arguments with musician friends of mine who are like " i don't listen to anything else while I'm recording/writing music, because I don't want to influence myself" and i'm the opposite. I want to know what other musicians are doing, A) for inspiration and B) so im not being redundant with the stuff I release. It seems like this Depp attitude is more prevalent in rather narcissistic people who think what they do is SOOOO special that it would be a crime for anyone elses' works to come anywhere near it. which rankles me. cos like you said, pirates of the Caribbean (for example) is not exactly an amazing piece of unfettered art. and neither our my friends albums, ha!

@Penny: But the pictures and the audio of the days immediately before his death seem to belie this. Few things are out of the realm of possibility, when it comes to MJ, I guess. But I don't believe that this was a ploy or stunt that went wrong.

@Penny: That's basically what Perez said too, when word came out that Jackson was being rushed to the hospital. He later took it down because he said that he was just faking it, and it was a publicity stunt to get out of the concert (or to draw more attention to his tour).

He changed it when he learned that it was actually serious.

p.s. I don't read Perez. I read this on Gawker. Don't judge me :P

@Penny: I don't know; I get the impression Michael was pretty heavily addicted to opiates and other sedatives. So he may have been medicating more because of stress re: the upcoming tour, and just medicated a little too far. I had junky friends that made this same mistake and killed themselves on accident. Opiates are relatively difficult to OD on IF you are a long term addict, but throw other sedatives in the mix, and all of the sudden experienced, tolerant users are dead. It sounds like he had some of these heavy sedatives around. I can think of at least a half dozen people I knew throughout the years who made this same mistake of taking a little bit more dope, combining it with some other relaxant, and then they were gone.

@mrsryan: He really seems to be a horrible person. The other night our cable was out and all we could get on regular TV was channel 11, so I broke down and watched Dateline - they were showing the Martin Bashir interview with Michael Jackson from a few years ago, which I had previously avoided seeing. The things he described his father doing was really upsetting to me. There was one part where Martin Bashir is asking him if he ever hit them with anything other than a belt, and Michael's hand flies to his face and you can hear him tearing up. It broke.my.heart.

So yeah, after hearing/reading all the things that man did to his kids over the years, the fact that he'd use Michael's death as a promotional tool does not surprise me at all. I just hope that people don't fall for it and let him actually profit from it.
