Will Italian Vogue Break With Fashion Mag Tradition, Feature Black Models?

  • Europeans are always more progressive than Americans. Rumor is, Italian Vogue may be producing a cover featuring only black models. [Fashionista]
  • Oh. My. God. High School Musical and Hannah Montana-inspired Crocs, soon available at a store near you. [Yahoo]
  • Francis Ford Coppola and Sofia Coppola will be the next faces of Louis Vuitton's "core values" campaign (the very same campaign in which Keith Richards agreed to participate in exchange for a LV monogrammed guitar case.) What do you think the Coppolas get out of this? An LV director's chair? An LV vinyard? [WWD, 1st item]
  • "Boyfriend" jackets are big for spring. But Peter Som says the ones he designed for Bill Blass are inspired by Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama. [WSJ]

10 Things Karl Lagerfeld Could Do Without

We don't always get around to reading Hong Kong's Prestige Magazine — uh, okay, we didn't know it existed until we learned that a friend of ours was working there — but the recent Karl Lagerfeld cover interview, conducted by said friend, Stephen Short, is nothing less than magnificent. Stephen, who apparently received a Karl Lagerfeld action figure for his efforts, talked to Karl for about three hours late one evening, and Karl had a lot to say, generally all negative, on subjects from books to children to love to Diane Von Furstenberg to food to the nineties. We excerpted some of his most effusively misanthropic utterances for your enjoyment. More »

Designers, Old School Supermodels Have Super Style At Murakami Show

Last night the Brooklyn Museum kicked off its new Louis Vuitton-sponsored exhibit on artist Takashi Murakami, who made a name for himself Stateside for putting whimsical art all over old-school Vuitton handbags. At the event: Once blue-haired Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs (left) who, a la Amy Winehouse, has apparently gone back to black. Also: Linda Evangelista, Selita Ebanks and Eva Herzigova. Models, Murakami, and more, after the jump. More »

Naomi Campbell Is Still Mad That Ethnic Models Aren't Working

  • "Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington would go to big designers and say: 'If you don't want Naomi to be in your show, then I don't want to be in it'...Women of colour are not a trend...That's the bottom line." — Naomi Campbell, still fighting for the cause of models of color. [Vogue UK]
  • Speaking of women of color: Liya Kebede is looking to diversify! The model will be launching a children's clothing line made in Ethiopia but sold in the United States. [Chic Report]
  • Dylan McDermott on why he attended the Proenza Schouler show: "My publicist said I should come." We admire his honesty. [WWD, 1st item]

Retro Fashion: Linda Evangelista On House Of Style

Fashion Week kicks off today, and thinking of runway shows tends to make us nostalgic for the heyday of The Supermodel. You know, back when the women walking in shows were drop dead gorgeous instead of dropping dead of anorexia. Anyway, besides Naomi Campbell and her violent streak, the most amusing character of the "Big Six" of supermodels is definitely Linda Evangelista. She's snooty, and her self-obsession is contagious, because the rest of the world was obsessed with her, too. Or at least, so she thought! In this House of Style segment, Linda discusses her charity work ("[I'll walk in one show] for free. Each season I choose a young, new designer to support"), her success ("I always wanted to be a model, but i never thought I'd become this"), and her fame ("I change my hair color and it gets headlines"). Clip above.

Donna Karan Has A New Boyfriend (Emphasis On "Boy")

  • Donna Karan's in love! The lucky guy is a male model, and a full two years older than "half her age." [Page Six]
  • Barney's New York Creative Director/bon vivant Simon Doonan has a new book coming out in April 2008 titled Eccentric Glamour. Tagline: "Say no to ho." And yes to fashion appreciated exclusively by homos! [Fashion Week Daily]
  • Diane von Furstenberg to Amex cardholders who forked over $550 to hear her speak at her NYC flagship store, "For those of you who don't know, this is the Meatpacking District. A lot of Japanese tour buses go around and say, 'Oh, this is where Diane von Furstenberg lives.'" Uh, they do? [Fashion Week Daily]

Britney Booked, Pretty In Pink

  • Britney Spears turned herself into the LAPD last night to be booked on her August 6 hit-and-run charge. (You'll recall that while trying to park her car, she hit a parked car, examined the damage, made a pouty face and then walked away. Photographers documented the whole thing.) She was at the police station for 45 minutes, during which she was fingerprinted and photographed, then released. [TMZ]
  • But before she was booked, she put on a pink wig, sat in her car and posed for photographers, of course. [The Sun]
  • Natalie Portman gave Julia Roberts a necklace that read "Cunt" after they finished the film Closer because they used so many "dirty words" in the movie. Later, Julia gave Natalie one that read "Lil Cunt." How sweet! [Rush & Molloy]

Past Tense Perfect: Floating Through History With Dior Couture

Is there anyone whose love of women matches that of John Galliano channeling Christian Dior? [Um, Jack Nicholson? -Ed.] Galliano's Fall 2007 couture collection for the House of Dior's 60th anniversary — shown in Paris yesterday — was one long and winding love letter to the female form and the way it has been encased, contoured, and costumed throughout history. But the bounds of history (or art history, more accurately, as evidenced by the insertion of an occasional paintbrush or palette as accessory) were rendered a little topsy-turvy. Opening with Gisele Bundchen in an iconic, full-skirted Dior suit, the show proceeded like Dorothy over the rainbow, progressing from black-and-white to full-blown Technicolor and alluding to some of the masterworks of Western art, from Fragonard to Monet to Velasquez and everywhere in between. And oh yeah, the best of the best from the golden age of the supermodel showed up to stomp around, including Amber Valetta, Helena Christensen, Naomi Campbell, Shalom Harlow, Stella Tennant, Erin O'Connor, and Linda Evangelista. Images of the glory that is Dior couture, after the jump. More »
