I like these. It's not real, people. It would be difficult to come up with a way to express that these women aren't interested in children without having some actual kids there for them not to be interested in. I don't think it's meant to be taken literally, especially the French Vogue editorial, which is 100% playful and fun. I imagine a lot of women look at these and think, "And that's why I'm not having kids," and not, "I am so having kids so I can neglect them just like that!"

I'm trying to pinpoint why these pictures bug me, and I think it has to do with all the women pictured as "bad mothers" being images of ideal beauty.

There seems to be an implication that these women are "above motherhood" because they are attractive and sexy. Therefore, motherhood is unattrative and unsexy. We would never see these images with Rosanne Barr, for example, smoking and throwing babies around.

Does that make sense at all?

For some strange reason, the photo where she's smoking and leaning against the crib with the martini reminds me of "The Great Gatsby"... totally can't pinpoint why my brain made that association, but it did.

I'm a terrible person, because I think that last picture is hilarious.

And hey, you know what? She could have been out with the girls engaged in all manner of debauchery, but she's home with the kids. Drinking, smoking, wearing ridiculous couture, and home with the kids. DON'T YOU JUDGE HER!

I dislike the one's with Milla, to tell you the truth. I am sick of working mothers getting simultaneously glamourized and demonized while giving (boo hoo!) poor, harried unemployed dads a friggin' trophy for making breakfast or changing a damn diaper.

@stealthird: Regarding your second question, I don't think being a "neglectful mother" is really the way to go in most countries in the world.

First of all, this is from the U.S., France, and Italy, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing most of the parenting (neglectful or not) is done mostly by women. I believe this photos only want to shock their readers.

I have an aunt who was raised in a manner very similar to the Italian Vogue shoot. She wasn't allowed to hug, kiss or in any way touch her mother ever, lest she get her "Mater's" newest frock dirty. I'm pretty sure the same went for "Pater" as well.
