In reply to Levi Johnston On Being A Gay Icon: "It's Great"
Levi is not a gay icon. Streisand, Liza, Gaga, a few assorted porn stars depending on which gay subgroup you ask - those are gay icons.

I do like the term snobographer used - gay "fave". He's certainly a fave in my book. He's just some dude who got tossed into this mess and is trying to make the most of it for himself. A great many people would do the same thing. On top of that by all appearances he seems to be a genuine sweet and nice guy which makes me want to hug him and pet him and call him George...right before I tie him down and gag him.

@ultraaman: Well actually that was me who called him a fave. But anyway the reason I popped back in is to link this interesting article on Towleroad where the gays of Wasila say hi and invite him to come meet them sometime -- someplace safely out of town.

Here's a pretty illuminating quote from that: "We do appreciate the way you keep reminding everyone that she's a liar. She tried to use you, to control you, but you stood up for yourself and forged a different path. Good for you."

Also, I thought it was VERY classy he wouldn't discuss where he had sex with Bristol. The things he says seem factual because they are almost too banal to be made up.

The flight thing drives me nuts.

Am I wrong in thinking that it's hugely irresponsible for a 44 year old woman carrying a special needs child in what is by definition a high-risk pregnancy to board a cross-country, high-altitude flight? And then to assume that she is absolutely insane if she repeats that journey, only this time leaking amniotic fluid and feeling contractions?

I'll admit, I've never had a kid, but the friends and relatives who have all stopped flying around 6 months in. The ones who were older mothers went straight to the hospital as soon as labour started in any way.

I don't care about the Mysterious Trig Origin story, but am I missing something about what I'd had as received wisdom long before I ever heard of Palin: that women should not fly late in pregnancy because it can put mother and child in danger if labour progresses, what with flight attendants not being medical professionals if things go badly wrong. I mean, Trig could have had a hole in his heart. This is not something the dermatologist onboard can handle with crossover medical skills.

Seriously, don't care about the conspiracy theory. But the decision-making in that suggested chain of events chills me, and makes me wonder why ANYONE would trust a person with those decision-making instincts to be President.

@limber: My mother had to get doctor's permission to fly into her 8th month for a family vacation and most will tell you to hold off on any long trips by that point. I, myself, by 8 months would have been nervous, not to mention highly uncomfortable.

At the same time, I am not a politician, and I would assume that there might be reasons that one would need to travel late into pregnancy. However, once water breaks? That means labor is going to start toot sweet (if it hasn't already -- some women's water breaks before labor begins) and in that case, yes, I would suggest its irresponsible to board a plane for a cross country trip. So even if there's nothing else to the story, you're correct -- this highlights very questionable decision making behavior.

@limber: I have to agree. It has been very clearly stated that her water had broken, she was having contractions. She knew she was pregnant with a special needs kiddo, and those births can be much harder with more complications. Given that she's also well over 30, the risk of complications is much higher as well. With that double whammy, what she did was just plain stupid. Additionally, each subsequent birth comes faster. I guess I err on the side of caution, but I wouldn't want to risk being on a plane whilst in labor.

Her decisions were hugely irresponsible, and in my opinion, pretty selfish. And flat out dumb.

I've had two kids. I guess I see it as much more logical to be on the ground, near a hospital if I'm having contractions and my water has broken.

    @SlayBelle: @pinupgirl:

Labor doesn't get serious until transition, which is when. Many women have their waters break and sit in early labor for anywhere from 2 to 24 hours, and they are nowhere near ready to push, and can still do simple things like walk and talk during contractions. Generally, you don't really have to go into the hospital until you are closer to transition.

Maybe she wanted to get home to be cared for by her OB rather than a stranger? Supposedly, she called her doctor before she boarded and was cleared to fly if I'm remembering my crazy Palin stories correctly.

Subsequent births may or may not come faster (though generally they do). If she was in early labor before transition, who knows how many hours she had left.

It's not the choice I would have made, nor do I necessarily think it was a good one, but I can't work up the energy to crucify her over it when there are many better things to crucify her over. OBs usually advise that you can fly until your 36th week... so I'm not sure where the 6 months figure is from if not paranoia.

@limber: The reason people stop flying around 6 months is because ofairline rules. The airlines don't want people to go into labour on a plane because it's a huge hassle.

A dermatologist is a medical specialist, they would not have any trouble delivering a child.

@Neodymium: I'm not knocking dermatologists -- I'm sure they'd be fine delivering a child. It's the high-risk pregnancy, hole-in-the-heart level of skill that I'd be worried about.

@Anycah: Her doctor might have known, but the airline certainly didn't. And I know women are perfectly capable of operating normally after their water breaks -- but most of them are near a phone or car, and can make it to a hospital in a half hour or so.

Palin was in midair, on a looooong flight. Twice. If she'd progressed quickly (and it's not something that can generally be predicted, from what I understand) then she'd've been hours away from the nearest hospital. I know things worked out in the end, but she introduced a lot of unnecessary risk.

First of all, I'm really disturbed by the quick impulse of people to allege misogyny without any recourse to specific evidence, and I'm further disturbed by the fact that people are hinting that Sullivan's alleged misogyny is a product of his homosexuality.

Second of all, it has to be at least someone relevant that Sarah Palin has repeatedly involved Trig Palin, his disability and his birth in her political and media career. It is very weird for people to criticize Andrew Sullivan for dragging Trig into all of this when it is, in fact, Trig's mother who has repeatedly done so. If you don't think an infant should be a topic of conversation in politics, I applaud that sentiment, but I suggest you place that blame where it belongs, with the woman who relentlessly pushes her child into the spotlight.

When someone asks a question, replying not with an actual answer but with a suggesting to read the thing the original question was about is almost a textbook definition of condescension. It places the respondent on high, and the questioner down low. The 'try . . . sometime' formulation is also a classic construction of patronization.

That, quite literally, can't be the logical answer because it doesn't fit the grammar of the blank elided in my question. Less pedantically, to say "I say he hates women because I've read his work" only begs the question of what one has read.

The risk of infection only really starts once you've started doing pelvic exams. (I say this as a woman who hightailed it to the hospital when her water broke, though.)

But the real point is ... so what? Unless Andrew Sullivan was that baby's father (and the idea of that just amuses me) it's really none of his damn business. Enough with the conspiracy theories. It's almost as annoying as those birther people.

@bluebears: I'm torn on this. On the one hand, Sullivan has apparently abandoned all useful political commentary to live inside his Sarah Palin obsession. And his methods are questionable. However, if there is reasonable doubt that it is her baby, I do think it is fair game to investigate that for the same reason I think it is fair to expose Carrie Prejean's hypocrisies. If Palin is going to promote herself, make money and potentially run for office on family values and abstinence and no abortions even for little girls who are raped, then I have no problem with someone exposing that she covered up or faked a pregnancy.
At this point, though, Sullivan's claims don't seem to hold much water. It's pure speculation.

@EndangeredRed: Yeah, but the thing is I don't think that raising someone's baby as your own means that you're anti-family values (or whatever) and it STILL seems to veer off onto the not our business track. I mean if it isn't (and I personally think it IS) her kid for all we know she is being honest inside the family or whatever about it and if she's not its wrong and maybe not the best idea but still...not relevant. I have no problem calling her out on actual hypocrisies (ie Prejeans sex tape contrasted with her "christian values") but...this doesn't seem to be one.

@bluebears: Well, actually, Sullivan goes after her for a lot of things. I followed his blog (among many others) during the time this issue broke and, as pmarble said, the timeline is very, very weird. It's not about one particular thing or another (like giving a speech or flying on an airplane), it's about the sum total that doesn't add up. And Sullivan has said asking these questions is not really about is-it-hers-or-not as it is about documenting her overall pattern of lying and hypocrisy, especially when it comes to matters of sexuality -- which, of course, is very relevant to him, a strong advocate for marriage equality.

I used to loathe Sullivan -- I have never forgiven him for his pro-war stance in 2004 and he still clings to some crap economics. But I give him credit, he's come a long way in the last couple of years. I don't mind at all his role as a thorn in her side. This woman's bullshit needs to be called, vigilantly.

@yeahisaidit: he needs to stop discussing her uterus. period. I don't care if he also talks about other things, he has no business talking about this. Unless she's claiming that people should elect her president because Trig is her natural born son then it simply is not a matter for public discourse.

@bluebears: True. I agree that it's probably her baby. I think she may have been considering an abortion and that's why she kept it all under wraps, but again, none of our business.
The hypocrisy would be in presenting her daughter as an example of abstinence by hiding the product of her sexual activity. Sort of a moot point by now, but especially troublesome if Bristol didn't have a choice at all. Which I wonder about. But again, that's Bristol, not Sarah, and I have no desire to drag her through the mud. As interesting a conspiracy as it may be, I've pretty much abandoned Andrew Sullivan's blog because of it.

@EndangeredRed: well yeah, I could see more of an argument towards mentioning it if it was possibly Bristols (like people claim) and she was hiding it to promote some sort of abstinence agenda except like you said, this was a moot point by the time they got to the RNC Convention so even that goes out the window.

@bluebears: So it isn't the tiniest bit relevant if she's a LIAR? I get that the whole pregnancy-conspiracy is a bit far-fetched, but so is her tale and I think if she is lying about something, it is relevant to her ability to govern, ie: be transparent and forthright with her constituents.

@sarah.rohn: I would feel the same if a male politician purposely was not honest about some personal medical issue (that would not have an effect on his ability to govern). Just because they're in the public sphere doesn't mean they can't keep some areas of their lives private.

@bluebears: I think that if someone makes their own uterus, and the uteruses of others, a campaign issue -- as she absolutely did -- then it's fair game. She claimed throughout the campaign, explicitly and implicitly, that what made her so electable despite her lack of requisite experience or knowledge was her moral superiority, her Christianness, her family (which she constantly trotted onstage), her hard line against reproductive choice and LGBT rights. She made the Trig story -- the moral of which was that she was so amazingly moral to have chosen to continue her pregnancy, and by the way no one else should have that choice -- a crucial narrative of her campaign. So, yes, she was claiming that people should elect her ticket because she gave birth to Trig. And Sullivan has a dog in this fight because she is out there trying to make his sexuality a political issue. If she's going to politicize his penis, well, turnabout's fair play.

@bluebears: It's the decision-making that gets me. Sarah Palin apparently boarded a flight 8 months pregnant, and then her water broke (which is essentially what "amniotic leak" means, it's just not gone full-out yet). And she left Texas, with its many excellent hospitals and fast ground transport and doctors, to get in a tin tube and go way high up in the air, just blithely sure that the special-needs baby she knew she was carrying would ride it out.

Everything worked out, which is great! But if it hadn't, Sarah Palin would have been the factor that introduced totally needless danger into the equation. Put flatly, her son could've been born with a hole in his heart, and she chose to go on a long-haul flight where the nearest medical help would be a First Aider and whoever on the plane had taken pre-med.

Of course, there's the flip side to this, which I find a lot more probable: she irresponsibly boarded a flight back to Alaska, but there was no sign of labour until she was almost on the ground. At which point they drove to the hospital and had the baby. And then she elaborated, as she tends to do, and created a Wilderness Woman story for herself -- only realizing too late that the other half of that take is Shockingly Irresponsible Mother.

In short: I'd prefer to think her a compulsive liar than so offhand about her child's survival. Neither quality makes me want her in office.

@yeahisaidit: I just don't have the view that two rights make a wrong.

As to the other point (and egg creams point) I could sort of see it from that perspective but its still a pretty big stretch. I mean if she had had a previous abortion and lied about it that would be different but just to say I'm against abortion and I didn't abort my kid...I mean, I can see the ridiculousness and dishonesty if it wasn't her kid to begin with but she did have what 4? other kids that she didn't abort. I guess if it was glaringly untrue that would be one thing but its not and all this speculation about womens bodies by (primarily) men is tiresome.

@bluebears: I guess I don't see discussions about her pregnancy as sexist. I have never given birth, but I know people who have (and happen to have a uterus). Does that mean I can't agree with him that the time line and her decisions are weird at the very least and raise some questions -- especially in light of her other areas of apparent dishonosty and hypocracy? If you don't agree that the facts seem weird, then fine, but labelling them as sexist and misongynistic doesn't really fit, in my opinion.

@bluebears: Yes, that's the point: Sullivan is pointing out the ridiculousness and dishonesty of it if Trig isn't her son. The whole point is that he questions whether Trig is her son, for some rather compelling, non-crazy reasons that you can read about elsewhere. But Sullivan isn't speculating about her "body" (which I agree would be a second wrong) -- he's not judging her for having the child or thinking about having an abortion or deciding not to. His issue is whether she lied about being pregnant for political gain -- specifically to (1) protect her image as a mother who could control her daughter's chastity and (2) promote her pro-life credentials with a compelling personal narrative about how she did not terminate her fetus which she knew had Down's Syndrome.

If Palin had ever had an abortion and lied about it, or even covered up her daughter's pregnancy and lied about it, I do think it's her private business and shouldn't be pried into. The salient issue here is that she politicized her own reproductive life in order to win an election. She intentionally marketed those very personal experiences, choices, and "authenticity" as the #1 reason to support her election. So when there's information suggesting that she did not have those experiences, did not make those choices, and that her version of authenticity is fake, and that's all there is to talk about because she has so little political experience or knowledge to speak of, then journalists not only can but should ask questions about it.

I have no problem with certain issues being off limits for public inquiry, so long as public figures do not make those issues foundational to their authority and credibility. But once they do, those issues must be back on the table as a matter of holding them accountable for what they say. What Palin tried to do, and largely succeeded in doing, is claim that her reproductive and family choices were a reason to vote for her, while refusing to answer questions about them because they were "personal." She succeeded by vilifying the questioners as being sexist, among other things. Yet to me it was no different than questioning any number of male politicians who have run on "family values" platforms and then were caught philandering. Where they put their penises is not the issue; the issue is that the disconnect between what they say and what they do reveals hypocrisy, dishonesty, and an attitude that they are not accountable to the rules and values that they are proposing to foist upon the public.

It may seem distasteful that Sullivan doggedly pursued Palin on the massive holes in her pregnancy narrative, but journalists should not value politeness. And almost all of them were way too polite to her throughout the campaign. And that was a shame in a year where marriage equality legislation was so under fire. Even if Sullivan was just spinning his wheels and getting nowhere, he did a service by pointing out the rank hypocrisy of a rising political star who couldn't tolerate people calling bullshit on her mythological personal life that she herself made a public issue while simultaneously demanding that their personal lives be subject to public legislation. I don't think Sullivan was wrong to do what any conscientious journalist should have done. But even if you see it as a "second wrong," hopefully you can also see it as a useful wrong for how it exposes the double-standard of rights to privacy between heterosexual and homosexual relationships.
