Dear Sally Struthers: I'm looking into adopting a young woman from Tokyo who is being denied a rich foreign banker. For just thousands a day I can ensure that my young woman has the ready cash for highlights, manicures and a bikini wax. My thousands will provide a luxury hotel suite, the finest champagne, and a steady stream of designer jewelry and clothing to this disadvantaged young woman. Please, won't you help, too?
I always love reading an article which helps to perpetuate the stereotype of women being whiny gold diggers and then men who hate/love them. it is like the BS on every prime time show where some female characters declares how since she was a little girl, she dreamed of getting married. Personally, I would like to kick all these people in the ass. Thin the herd my friends.
@MissFiFi: I know! I don't recall ever once thinking about getting married when I was a kid, I was too busy practicing my Academy Award acceptance speech.
This story actually made me feel kinda sad for everyone involved: the women who must on some level feel they don't have any real options for independence, and the men who must on some level feel pretty alienated by their lives (seems to me living abroad ought to be a fulfilling experience, not a soulless routine of overwork and picking up gold-diggers at boring bars).
Poor things, they're suffering must be so huge right now. They need a support group, "Women who have lost their boytoys: and how to cope with boytoys lost bonus."
Oh god the expat scene in Japan is just rife with all these sleazy Americans and their sleezy gold digging hanger-ons. It is very disturbing.
And, what? Japan has been in a shitty recession for more than a decade now! I guess it took a global financial crisis to wean some off their brand-name fetishes. This is like Real Housewives of Roppongi.
The desire to be a kept woman when you have other options is mystifying to me. An insecure guy who goes into investment banking to buy pussy instead of relying on his personality, looks, wit is something I can wrap my head around a little easier.
I currently have the hots for a bike mechanic and a special ed high school teacher so this really isn't my area of expertise.
@veej: No offense to any investment bankers, I'm sure jezebankers are awesome, but I've found that people who go into investment banking are kind of lacking in the wits and personality department.
@Meg: I'm thinking about helping them out in their time of need. Maybe a bake sale? How many lemon bars do you think I would need to sell in order to purchase Bulgari earrings?
@BabyJane: I think we could do enough for some knock-offs, but "these chicks are smart" so I think they'd know. It's heartbreaking, isn't it? To be able to identify the problem, yet offer not real solutions. It will haunt me...
Fight the export of gold digging!!! NAFTA sent gold diggers south of the border and now it's getting outsourced to Asia. What's next? Will I go to a bar at a conference and have an obviously Indian woman who tells me she's "Barbara from Omaha" say that she's only in town for a little bit and that she's looking for someone to show her the city?

So you mean that these girls might actually be forced to.. (gasp!) date men for their looks and personality? And they'll have to stop thinking of their boyfriends as giant wallets on legs?
