Can you believe it that Vogue at one time was one of the first magazines to publish photos of concentration camps? I love Lee Miller's work, I saw a beautiful exhibit many years ago, which was opened by her son, who still spoke lovingly of his mother, inspite of the difficulties growing up with her.

She was my first avatar when I signed up to Jez. I find it hard to think of a cooler human being who has ever walked the planet. Except for The Fonz, of course.

After seeing her in "Blood of a Poet" (where it's obvious why the Perfect Muse title adhered to her), I read up on her relationship with Man Ray, for starters. And as tempestuous as that was, it might be the least interesting thing about her.

This is useless but I had NO IDEA Conde Nast was ever an actual human. These (her) photographs (particularly the first and second) are breathtaking.

Sorry if this isn't an important comment, but thank you Tatianna for writing this. I love Surrealist art and it's so important to recognize the women of the movement as well as the men.

I clipped the first photograph (the torn window screen) out of the New Yorker last year and still have it. It's beautiful and haunting--can't decide if I want to go to that place or run away from it.

@meritxell: Yeah I loved having the room to go back and revisit some of her photos but at the same time, I was hoping it was just a slow day and that this exhibit was more popular than it appeared to be on that day.

My great-grandmother was an American spy during the First World War. We have framed documents given to her after she returned to the States that have the most tangled wording you've ever seen. I had to ask my dad what she was actually doing over there because the wording was so convoluted that she could have been doing anything from spying to serving tea.

Unfortunately, her life post-war, was not much unlike Miller's. She moved to the midwest, married, and had children. Her life thereafter was domestic and in the shadow of her husband.

@dcdulce: Normally I would sort of "gah" at the thought, but this is one woman who deserves more recognition. The movie would have to be well written and directed (if they clean up her life too much, it would be a disaster), but Kate would be lovely in the role. Oh my.

@dcdulce: Given the recent Kidman-Downey,Jr. Arbus semi-biopic Fur, Miller's story seems like a natural.

I'd love to see her life made into a (well-made) film.

@mllej: If I remember correctly it was in the apartment but she staged the scene a bit. She did genuinely need to take a bath because she had been out photographing the rubble in Berlin and basically camping out for weeks or something.
