Damnit. I stan for "30 Rock" but Jenna's Filipino joke from last episode kinda bugged, and Alec's crack [smh] is gonna make it a wee bit hard for me to enjoy the reruns.

Are we the safe Asian (Pacific Islander) to make fun of? Because we have a friendly history, not fraught with Vietnam War guilt and such? Yay for being "A Little Brown Brother". Don't get me started on what the U.S. boys stationed in the P.I. used to call women there. Starts with "Little Brown"... ends with wanted to kick some dude's ass.

Arghhhh. Sorry if this is off-topic now. Change topics. Is that Ireland in the photo with him? Is she that old now? Quite lovely!

I liked Breaking The Waves and all, but Von Trier needs to get over himself. From the comments I read on the earlier thread about this, I don't think I'll be able to stomach this movie....

@Penny: Both "Waves..." and "...Dark" were fairly awesome (if catatonic-depression inducing) but I saw part of one of Lars von Trier's more recent and came away thinking he needed a LOT of therapy before I'd bother with another.

i didn't even know what "gynophobia" was until i looked it up today. since i only read the reviews and haven't seen it, i can only comment from that perspective. but it sounds like a sexual morality play where the woman punishes her husband and herself sexually because their child fell out a window while she and her husband were in another room, unawares, having sex.

i guess i~~ get it. but what would she have done if instead she was home sick alone, and had to run to the toilet because she had a case of the runs and was in there a long time, and her kid fell out the window? what would she have cut off then?

just something oddly medieval about the mutilation in this movie, especially since the woman carries it out~~ like sex is bad and dirty and she's disgusting for enjoying it, and she was punished by losing her child. the cinematography makes it shocking and the setting is modern-day, but the storyline itself seems "gynophobic."

Alec Baldwin is now on my Shit List. This Filipino/European blend of Aussie is tired of people making jokes about:

*Imelda Marcos. Living under the Marcos regime wasn't shits and giggles - my Filipino rellies are allowed to joke about it, clueless white people who think Imelda is "cute" aren't.

*Ping pong balls. Remarkably, the majority of women from the Philippines and Thailand do not derive their income from performing lewd novelty acts/sex work.

* Mail Order Brides. My parents met while my father was on holiday in my mother's native land. They corresponded via mail, sending love letters for several months, before deciding to marry. If my mother wasn't Asian, this would be considered romantic, rather than an indication of/cover for a possible financial transaction.

Note: The next person to imply that I am more suited to domestic duties than an "Australian" girl can go fuck themselves.

Two of my uncles married Filipino women, one of the lovely ladies is of mixed descent and second generation, while the other moved to the states shortly before they met. The two couples' children look very different and are constantly asked "what they are." The children that are darker often get mistaken for Mexican in school, while everyone assumes the lighter child is White. It's disheartening to see the way they are treated differently, especially by my own grandmother, who favors the lighter child.

Also I wonder how much of this has to do with the reported contentions between MLP and the director and producer of the show- like, either they forced her to do it because they didn't like her or that she's complaining about it now because she doesn't like them? Either way, a shitty situation.

@AlmostDream: Imagine there is a nude scene written and you tell the director that you don't want to do it. Rather than getting you a camisole for the scene, he cajoles you, then yells at you, convincing you that your artistic integrity is at stake if you don't show your tits.

Yes, she should have said no if she really didn't want to do it, but the director wasn't on the up and up.

And she's an established actress and the star of the show. I could take that excuse from an up-and-comer who was scared to jeopardize her career, but that's not her situation.

@Sassy Pants: The thing is, the point ISN'T to talk about what flavor coffee you're drinking or the walk you just took or how it's raining outside. Some people do that, and it's annoying and irrelevant. But most people use Twitter in pretty groundbreaking ways - I know freelancers who get jobs from it, unknown authors who market themselves with it, etc. I've found it to be pretty fantastic, but I don't post links about what I had for breakfast, so.
