atrial fibrillation: let me practice your pronunciation for when my husband jokes about me keeping the couch from hitting the ceiling all day (it's a married with children joke...we both aspire to such marital happiness and are well on our way!)
After seeing two different neurologists, none of whom could figure out why I was in horrendous, screaming, suicidal pain that painkillers couldn't touch, my mom Googled my symptoms and figured out that I was leaking spinal fluid.
@CoalMineCanary: Holy crap! That sounds worse than mine- two different ER visits diagnosed me with an ulcer, despite NONE of the symptoms fitting. I sent my test results to an aunt who's a nurse and she came back with pericarditis - an infection of the lining of the heart. My doctor had said he tested for it, but not according to any of the paperwork he gave me. Also, I had a CT but the doctor made it very clear she was only looking for pulmonary embolisms. Fortunately, it went away without treatment.
Kathleen Hanna collaborating with Christina Aguilera? I can't believe I just typed that sentence. Excuse me, I'm gonna go put on "Deceptacon" and "Hot Topic" and cry into my whiskey.
That's unbelievable that Jessica's doctors didn't test her for Crohn's. When I hear that she's a teenager with those symptoms, Crohn's is immediately at the top of my list (and I'm only a lowly med student). She sounds like an awesomely smart girl!
i can already hear the bigPharma research labs humming as they concoct a patented pill based off metoclopramide so they can market it as a 3X more expensive alternative to the generic.
Way to go Jessica! I always remember in my intro to abnormal psych class the professor saying how we would all be likely to diagnose ourselves at some point but that it should be taken with a grain of salt.
Now I think I have seasonal affective disorder because I work indoors, catatonic episodes upon awakening and a mania for Luke Wilson.
"The Pregnant Women Support Act, which aims to reduce abortions by offering more assistance to women who feel they cannot afford a child, may be gaining congressional support."
Interesting. Is it common for women to want to keep a child but abort because they don't have the money? I definitely think a lot of women are pressured to have their child adopted when they would make a great mother if they had the money.
@Kate2.18: Sounds like the Israeli foundation "Friends of Efrat" which works to prevent Jewish women from getting abortions by providing diapers and food and stuff. Frankly, it freaks the shit out of me.
@Kate2.18: I haven't reviewed the bill, but the Pregnancy Support Act sounds like a step in the right direction. I can imagine that some women do want to keep their baby, but are unable to afford it.
In general, our country is so stingy and difficult with mothers and children that I'm willing to take anything we can get at this point.
@deeemer: Yes, exactly. Helping people, especially children, is a good idea.
I think it's very worrisome that the reaction to "let's help mothers out" is often "but they could be getting an abortion instead". This is about choice, people. Some women will choose abortion. For others it's adoption. For some women the choice is keeping the pregnancy. It would be better to see more focus on prevention, but helping struggling moms out isn't a bad idea.
@Dancingfrog: While I agree with you, you have to recognise that the reason people react suspiciously is because so many "lets help mothers out" programs have been run by disingenuous religious groups who blow smoke up the woman's ass until the moment she cannot terminate or gives birth- at which point their supplies and diapers and support dry up completely and they are demonised in the press and the check-out line as welfare mothers.
"High school student Jessica Terry had been sick for eight years with vomiting and diarrhea, but doctors could not seem to figure out what was wrong with her. One day, during her AP science class, Terry solved the mystery herself: she diagnosed herself with Crohn's disease after examining a slide of her intestinal tissue."
Damn, now I can't use the whole 'this stuff is useless' excuse to not study for my finals. Bleargh.
@jemandtheholograms: My understanding is that pathologists often give the extra slides to the patient. There's nothing particularly hazardous about fixed sections of intestinal tissue.
@thesciencegirl: I'm hoping she requested them. I'd be a little sketched out if, after giving a bodily sample of any kind, my doctor said "Well, looks good, so here's that back."

So: they think they can dance...
(In a completely related note, I discovered "So You Think You Can Dance" a couple weeks ago and my life has forever changed.)

I have an unjustifiably large crush on Evan, the Broadway dancer.

Seriously, Cat Deely (sp?) the host is practically the best part. She's so fab.

And yes, Cat is DARLING. I described her tonight as "Amateurish in a completely endearing way."
