And yet around half of whites (men and women) voted for Prop 8 in California, while something around 70 % of blacks and hispanics voted for it... it's a strange cognitive dissonance to elect Obama and then discover the next morning that more civil liberties have been smashed, by minorities, no less.

I think McCain's win with white women has a great deal to do with the fact that a lot of women still let their husbands dictate how they vote. My mom told me an infuriating story about a conversation she had with a high school friend who always votes Republican -- the friend said she couldn't believe what an idiot Palin was -- but admitted that yes, she would still vote for her, because her husband owns a small business and he says Republicans are better for small businesses. My mom pointed out that our current Republican-created economy isn't so hot for small businesses, but apparently that didn't matter.

I also think a lot of people, and probably especially white people, were willing to believe the lies the McCain ticket was spewing just because, you know, a black guy as president is just too scary :-/ This white girl is just glad that women of all colors got out there an rocked the vote -- it's about time women and minorites stood together and made it happen!

I have been a Obama supporter from the start, and to see this election develop the way it did and end most satisfyingly, I am all smiles. And it is because of the women. We deserve to have someone who cares about the domestic issues as much as he does, considering that it seems that women, the family figure head, are affected by these issues so deeply. One thing though, I can't bash the women who voted for McCain, however ridiculous there reasoning may have been. Coming from a republican family and a republican area (I am the singular democrat in my immediate family), their issues with abortion and welfare are what often make them wary of us. They hear pro-choice and think pro-abortion and that is not what it means at all! Considering welfare, many women who are republicans are blue-collar workers and have strived to have a nice home and a nice car and have a certain amount of pride about it and think everyone should have to work for it. Which is true, as a former welfare recepient, I can tell you how desperately I wanted off but how much of a minority I was because of it. Welfare has become a handout not a hand up and that NEEDS TO CHANGE! But back to the subject, thanks to all the republican and democratic women who voted for Obama!

A lot of the women that I saw who said they voted for McCain did so due to abortion and the heavily misguided idea that Obama supports "baby killing". They don't understand the medical necessities or actual statistics for "late term" or "partial birth" abortions...and they tend to say things like "you shouldn't be able to use abortion as birth control!"

Apparently they believe in some mythical creature called Deliberately Getting Pregnant Just to Terminate that uses abortion as either birth control or a very time consuming way to kill a viable fetus for kicks...not to mention being in collusion with another breed of mythical creature called Doctors Who Want to Kill Babies.

I'm really sad that white women voted that way because UGH. Palin makes my uterus die every time she opens her mouth.

@tiredfairy: Kind of off topic, but that whole argument about using abortion as birth control was one that was used by the chaplain at the highschool I went too. I was always so WTF when he brought it up and the scary bit was most of the kids in the class agreed with him and would get uncomfortable when I called bullshit.

@BluebellaElliot: I went to the same kind of straight-line "Christian" high school (in Arkansas, no less). We were told not only that same thing, we had segregated "sex ed" (and I use that term loosely, since I didn't feel very enlightened by any of it), where we were also told that we were, under no circumstances, to go dancing with a boy, since that automatically leads to pregnancy. (That was my WTF? moment #1)

They also told us we must *never* sit on a boy's lap, but if for some Godforsaken reason we had absolutely no choice, TO PUT A PHONE BOOK ON HIS LAP FIRST AND SIT ON THE PHONE BOOK. (WTF? moment #2)

This explains why I ceased attending services twenty years ago. And voted for Obama.

@Callisto: Okaaaaaay then. At least I had a few years of open and informative public school sex ed before my Anglican high school took all the darn fun of it! The thing is, abortion, STD's, gay marriage and all those 'controversial' issues came up in 'Christian Living' classes, not sex ed, so you can imagine the spin they would put on all these things. I honestly thought I wasn't alone in my 'WTF/yeah right' attitude but the kids totally bought into it and it truly freaked me the fuck out.

But back to your story: WOW. Were you just laughing the entire time because I would have.

As a friend of mine said "I'd like to see a world in which abortion didn't happen. But history tells me that elected leaders have been influential in causing death and misery of all sorts besides abortion, all around the world: air raids, famine, homelessness, torture, assassination, hunger, land mines, extraordinary rendition, and on and on. A president can also be influential in preventing those things. So I make my decision in part by voting for the person who I think will cause less death and misery overall. Impossible, but I try."

I am not rabidly anti-abortion, but I am pro-life; I want EVERYONE to be able to live a life not constrained by poverty, famine, rape, war... I think Obama will get us a little close to the ideal.

Woohoo! Latinas FTW! Many older Latinas are very socially conservative and former Hillary supporters but Obama won them over big. I suspect this has something to do with the tremendous love and respect he shows for the ladies in his life, a man who loves his wife and daughters so much isn't likely to sell women down the river.
