Dr. Carhart gave the eulogy for Dr. Tiller at the interfaith memorial here in DC. He is an incredible human being. PBS interviewed him and Dr. Hern for its "Abortion Providers Under Siege" segment: [www.pbs.org]
Also, just a note on language: "late-term abortion" has no medical meaning -- it's another way anti-choicers tie abortion to the idea of a baby (by associating it with birth). The correct term is simply "late abortion." NPR has the explanation: [www.npr.org]
"Doctors refer to term as the end of a pregnancy, when a pregnancy is over and baby is ready to be born. So, late-term would actually mean after a pregnancy is complete - after 39 weeks. So, in fact, doctors who talk about abortion later in pregnancy simply talk about late abortions."
"Americans may support abortion rights, but even 40 years after Roe, we don't talk about it like other medical procedures."
THIS. Right after the assassination of Dr. Tiller, I was in the car discussing it with Mr. Rex's (extremely liberal) father and our toddler-age daughter was in the backseat. FIL Rex opened his mouth to say something, then looked at my daughter and stopped. What he was going to say was simply the word "abortion". I was stunned that he considered the mere word too offensive to say in front of her, as if it were an obscenity. How can we expect abortion to ever be de-stigmatized if even those of us who are firmly pro-choice are hesitant to even use the word?
I'm tired of hearing about how the bloody mechanics of an abortion are being treated like some dirty little secret that pro-choicers are keeping from themselves. Any medical procedure inside the human body is going to be gory and scary, especially to non-medical professionals. (My God, hearing about my sister's emergency c-section haunts me to this day.) Fashion magazines don't get this graphic in their many many articles about plastic surgery. Does Sports Illustrated describe exactly how all those sports injuries are corrected? It bothers me that these writers include these scenes when articles about different kinds of medical issues do not. Tumor removal, brain surgery, abortion: all pretty nasty, all very necessary.
"By accepting that their careers offer an almost unacceptable degree of occupational hazard, we all but ensure that younger people won't take their place when they retire." This is, I think, the actual biggest threat to abortion provision in the US - to young medical students or professionals it's just going to seem like a hell of a lot more of a nightmare than it's worth to even consider going into this field. It's profoundly depressing that the anti-choice brigade may eventually get what they want through sheer physical intimidation.
i read the hern profile last night (i am one of those strange women who has an esquire subscription primarily for these articles) and was left feeling strange about the profile. the writer seemed to dehumanize hern quite a bit, but i couldn't tell if that was out of the writer's intention, or if the writer was creating that sort of atmosphere to play into the average esquire reader's probable detachment from abortions in general. hern came off as a brilliant man, and his statements about the general passivity of america in regards to domestic terrorism against abortion clinics, staff, and providers should be heeded.
@southernbitch: Yeah, throughout the article I was really disgusted by the author's insistent use of the term "abortionist" until I got to the last paragraph. I understand what he was trying to do by hitting you over the head with that term but I don't think it was as effective as the author thought it might be. Incredibly moving story, though.
Terrorism is unfortunate. But if these neanderthals have to resort to terrorism, hopefully it means they know their silly ideas/values are outdated and dying out.
If only they'd go the way of their values...
@greengrey: if these neanderthals have to resort to terrorism, hopefully it means they know their silly ideas/values are outdated and dying out.
I want to believe this, but at the same time I think a lot of anti-abortion terrorists believe they are speaking for the majority, that they're just willing to do what no one else will do. That's one reason I think non-violent anti-abortion advocates have the responsibility to denounce these people -- and not in wishy-washy language either. Someone like Scott Roeder isn't going to listen to pro-choice people -- but he might listen to those on his own side.
@Anna N.: Except that, once a sociopath like Roeder attains his personal "state of grace," I don't even think the most unreasonable anti-choicer could turn him. Literally, he "went around the bend," committing a crime because he convinced himself it was "God's will." As with 9/11, we've seen how powerful a motivator belief can be.
The same people who are screaming about babies being killed are also screaming about their refusal to allow these babies, if born, to have health care.
@WaltzingMatilda: Surely the babies born to 15 yr old mothers or babies born with pre-existing medical issues will be able to afford health care jusssst fine on their own. Really, once they're out of the womb, the magic has kind of worn off I guess.
@WaltzingMatilda: And really, if he can't, he should have considered the state of the job market before being conceived anyways. It shows an appalling lack of personal responsibility.
"Leroy Carhart doesn't go out in public anymore, for fear of being shot." But Bill O'Reilly said that abortion doctors are getting rich off of abortions. Can't Carhart hire a security force and buy a bullet proof limosine with the gold bars he's paid?
@Gumbina80: I'd love O'Reilly to have to walk a mile in Dr. Carhart's shoes. Maybe if he were forced to look around every corner, leave the house with a bodyguard, and jumped at every loud noise, he'd STFU.
@pesematology: Yeah, but it's a real test. I think this is the kind of test that God put to his followers in Biblical times -- you want to do it so badly, but you know it goes against the rules of decent society. Plus, it is hard to argue from a position of reason and logic when you don't follow your own beliefs. As I tell my wife, when we talk about how to handle the latest unreasonable tirade from her ex, we have to be the more reasonable party, because in the end that will count for more. But it's so hard.
It's isn't even about late-term abortions -- every abortion provider is in the crosshairs of a radical fringe that has created its own morality in order to justify the senseless murder of men and women in order to save the lives of children they do not care about after they are born.
@NefariousNewt: Seconded. The same people who want to know "why should we have to give up our insurance for the uninsured?" don't seem to realize that they won't, and by the way, at one time, all of those uninsured folks were fetuses.
@NefariousNewt: Unfortunately, it seems to me that my generation (GenY) is so comfortable in their complacency and is not going to provide a stronger opposition to the violent rhetoric on the other side.
@Brownish With Points: Then you have to stand up, and make them. It's not easy -- commenting here is a step, blogging about it is a step, donating to Planned Parenthood is a step... the journey of a thousand miles begins with but one step...
@NefariousNewt:
the journey of a thousand miles begins with but one step...
Thank you for this. My friends and I will always remain vocal about this issue , especially when doctor's lives are threatened for providing a legal procedure. I just hope we can get a few folks to join us along the way.
@Brownish With Points: Each drop from the sky leads to the raging river below... but enough platitudes. It's a slow, laborious, frustrating process. The inherent problem is turning the tide of opinion while fighting centuries of opposite thinking. Change in human behavior does not happen overnight.
who described himself as "the only doctor in the world" who performed late-term abortions
Dr Hern, you do a brave and formidable work, but with all due respect and admiration for your courage, the USA does not equal: the world.
I researched, and aside for some medical requirements only for some countries, we also have: Canada, England, Wales, NZ, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, China, France, The Netherlands, and probably a few more I missed.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Dr. Richardson and the rest of the OB/GYNs that provide abortions in this country should stop performing them. I am very much pro-choice but I don't think these people should have to risk their lives for a majority of women who have had abortions (or will have abortions) and still vote pro-life...and donate and support pro-life causes and candidates. Operation Rescue et al has won the war in America. They are allowed to intimidate, threaten, bully and even kill nurses and doctors in this country for performing, in many cases life-saving, necessary legal medical procedure... and they all do it under the auspices of "free speech" and "saving lives" and we, the American public, let them get away with it.
So I say let the fundie loons turn America into Nicaragua. Let American women (and hopefully men) wake the fuck up to what these people's real agenda is. Let the American public see what life is really like without OB/GYNs that perform abortions and prescribe birth control.
I bet you the anti-choice rhetoric would evaporate within a year.
(I say this as someone, who if they actually needed an abortion or birth control, could easily leave the country and get what they needed from Sweden etc etc. Just the way rich people did back when abortion and birth control was illegal in this country. Too bad for the poors.) *For those who can't tell, this is me channeling my anger at anti-chioicers and apathetic voters into irony*
Anyone who wishes (like I do) that they could congratulate or send support to Dr. Hern but wants to respect his (understandably) rigid security should think about donating to Medical Students for Choice: http://medicalstudentsforchoice.org/index.php?page=support It's the next best thing to going to med school (for me at least)
@KarenGabulous: I just called his office to say thanks for providing this service to women, and the answering service worker sounded pleasantly surprised.
I also am making a PP donation in his name.
