Tim Gunn just embodies every positive personality trait that is possible to take on by choice. By that I mean he's kind and respectful and friendly. He chooses his words carefully. He's a role model for everyone. So sweet.
Fer cute! I just started loving Jimmy Fallon again...the show was getting hard to watch for me, but this is the most comfortable I've seen him yet! Good old Tim Gunn...I think this pairing works because Tim Gunn is a brilliant teacher, and Jimmy Fallon is still kind of a kid.
@minnesotameltdown: And because Tim Gunn has the most impeccable manners I've ever seen in any living person. He has the ability to put anyone immediately at ease with just a few words. It's a gift and I do so admire him for it.
I really appreciate that this was shown on mainstream television, and not in a "jokey-haha-but-seriously-I'm-so-straight-I-piss-beer" kind of way. Inch by inch, homosexuality is becoming more accepted. Yay!
I saw Tim give a lecture at the Corcoran a couple of years ago, and I think the entire room left deeply in love with him. He is awkward, self-depricating, and he could charm the designer pants off of literally anyone. LOVE.
I desperately want to love her. She's unapologetically geeky, she's Asian-American, she isn't trying to slut it up on national television. But I just haven't found anything yet where she's actually funny. It doesn't take much talent to act like a stoner. Exhibit A: Keanu Reeves.
@chicanafalsa: If you want to work in film, you take the roles you can get. In that case, a stoner.
When you consider how many geeky, asian american, girls there are in movies or on tv...that IS a big break. Sorry.
I'll take contrived twee over the rest of it. At least she looks like an actual person. I'm getting more than slightly tired of everyone complaining about things being "twee" or "cute". That's a damn sight better than, say, misogynistic or sexist.
As a 35 year old woman, I'm probably not Charlyne's target demographic which is why I don't get if she's just acting like a six year old or why that's supposed to be funny.
@SharonTaint: I've only seen her in Knocked Up and she was supposed to be super high all the time and I thought that was funny but...idk maybe she's the new Cheech. Which actually would be awesome.
@bluebears: She said in an interview recently on Conan O'Brien that she didn't smoke pot at all, ever, and had never when she auditioned for that role.
I don't know, I hate cutesy quirky bullshit. I loathed Juno. But I like this girl, she made me laugh, she seems all right to me.
@SharonTaint: Thank you! I completely agree, and I'm 21. I'm not really sure what it is she is going for. My boyfriend wants to see Paper Heart, but I'm not sure I could take 90 minutes of her schtick.
Also, I kind of resent some of the threads below saying that if you don't like her, you just are disappointed because she's not another Megan Fox/Insert "Typical" Actress Here. It's totally possibly to just not identify with her and not find her funny and also not like the idea of promoting Hollywood ideals & stereotypes.
@Fenchurch: I think people are saying that because others are knocking this girl for dressing homely or some nonsense, and saying it's fake... Which is not fair and kind of bullshit, in my opinion. Next time some A-list celebrity goes on Cone Zone or Jimmy Fallon wearing a ridiculously fancy dress for a three minute interview I'll be sure to call her a phony and say she's trying too hard.
@bluebears: Oy.
Ok, I don't know how to link. And we've been asked not to call out commenters that way. And it's rude. But someone said her outfit is "trying too hard" and that it comes across as "desperate" and that her face weirds them out, etc. It's all there.
I don't want to get into an argument over a comedian. I was simply responding to a comment with my honest opinion, not trying to anger anyone (people who I quoted.)
@Eleanor Ramilly: those are all about her PERSONA though you said people were knocking her for dressing homely. I guess the weirds me out comment could be about her appearance but I took it to mean all those grimaces she makes. Whatever. My point is people have expressed opinions about her and no one has really gone after her appearance. Its just mildly insulting to reduce people criticisms to, you're just saying she's ugly or whatever. I would also add that she is totally cute and photogenic.
@bluebears: Yeah I have Faris plays it well, the thing I like about Cheech and Chong is that they actually smoke pot. Maybe Anna did some "research". Oh yes "how in the hell did I end up on a ferris wheel?"
@bluebears: I was specifically responding to Fenchurch's comment with why I thought people were saying that. I mean, writing that someone's outfit comes across as "desperate" is like, "way harsh, Tai." That's not really a valid criticism of anything. I wasn't trying to say that everybody that criticized the girl was an asshole or felt the same way or what have you. If you don't think she's funny, that's cool.
I have no intention of seeing this movie, it's not my cup of tea, but I do like Charlene and she seemed nervous. I hope she doesn't read this website.
@bluebears: I don't think Smiley Face is where we're gonna get our female stoner icon. I found Jane to be incredibly annoying and just playing up stereotypes.
@Eleanor Ramilly: see this is the thing I PERSONALLY object to about her. I am like, 99% sure she is a focused and intelligent woman (I just don't think you fall into her level of success by accident) and I'm sure she understands this sort of thing is part of the whole trip. I would just love to see a female movie star that was funny and not so...dumbed down? It just seems like a cop out. Oh I'm unconventional but don't be afraid doods of the world I'm still a scatterbrain and unsure of myself. Thats just my opinion. Sorry I wasn't trying to start a fight either, I hope I didn't offend you.
@bluebears: Smiley Face is my go to movie when I need to veg out (read: wake and bake on a day off). I can relate to Jane for being a hopeless, harmless stoner just as I can relate to Charlyne for seeming comfortable in her own fabulously geeky skin. I was happy to find Smiley Face in the world of male dominated stoner culture.
@Fenchurch: Here's the thing, though. Like her or not, this type of movie, and her kind of character, is way more likely to result in more diverse films and roles than the Megan Fox's. That's the difference in what kinds of movies you support.
So, of course, find her funny or not on your own terms. I can't stand Adam Sandler and I love Patton Oswalt. Humor is very individual.
And I think there is an issue with the fact that we are conditioned at this point to expect certain things from actresses, both in looks and performances and acceptable persona's. Even those of us who think we don't, can be effected by that.
To me, I can support a movie that's imperfect if it's at least putting forth the effort to tell a worthwhile story. I don't just support anything, just because something is indie doesn't mean it's good or even promoting good ideas or stories. But just because something is cute or quirky doesn't mean it's bad, either.
@tiredfairy: I agree with what you're saying. I think my main issue with her persona (I don't really have an opinion about the movie itself, other than I like the idea of it being different than the norm) is described very well by bluebears: "I would just love to see a female movie star that was funny and not so...dumbed down? It just seems like a cop out. "
It is not that I find Ms. Yi's persona to be unacceptable because I've been conditioned to expect something different, it is just that her manner is not to my taste. And that's OK, because as you said, humor (and compatibility, etc.) is individual. I really do wish her all the best, and hope the movie does well to encourage risk taking in film and television.
You can be cute, quirky, and even precious, while still retaining some elegance and poise. I do it all the time.
I almost like her, but it's like, cut the baby act, it's just as bad as Paris Hilton's.
And as a 24 who likes "grandma clothes," I dig it.
Wow I am actually laughing out loud at my desk. Contrived or no, she's hilarious. Her character in Knocked Up was my favorite part of that movie, and Mr. Peepers?! COME ON! This girl is legitimately funny.
I love her. She was at an advance screening I saw and she was really funny and seemed very genuine (sorry for repeating myself). And frankly, I think it is refreshing to see an actor out there that isn't so polished and perfect.
