DC and Marvel do a lot of these straight to DVD animated releases. Would it be nice to give the lady a feature film released in theaters? Sure, but this is hardly teh company relegating her to the junk pile.

I would love to see a live-action WW movie, provided a) WW is played by someone believably buff and strong-looking, and b) they find some way to update the costume so it's a little more practical and a little less thighriffic. I don't want the inevitable speculation over an Amazon Brazilian to detract from the ass-kicking!

@Gundam_Halo: Number one: they broke from canon. Catwoman sucked because they cast Halle Berry and crammed her into a "secret identity" persona that didn't fly. The premise was unimagined. The script was shit, the CG was blurry and the mocap wasn't natural at all. There were a few sparkles of dialogue and acting here and there, but they faded quickly. It was just plain shitty movie, and no combination of it's best (albeit subpar) attributes could remotely save it.

As for "why no live-action?" or "why no theatrical release?" They went with an animated update because it's a cheap, safe, noncommittal way of testing the waters and making a profit. WB did this with Batman and Superman, and because they have a solid crew and process on the animation side that can make a successful product.

And they'll keep doing it because they haven't got the balls to keep the studio hands out of the creative process (ie: Planet of the Apes(2001)). A It's a textbook move.

As for her costume, I've always like Donna Troy's version. Or, her Kingdom Come version, which actually has shown up in the regular books occasionally.

Yay! I was wondering if the day would pass without you mentioning it. I saw this at the New York ComicCon and it was all kinds of awesome and yes you should go buy it to show that Wonder Woman can be profitable. Remember: she's owned by Warner Brothers which had that "no female lead" edict then had to eat crow when their defunct New Line arm produced Sex & The City. It's so bad they're going to try to relaunch Superman a second time despite the disappointment of Superman Returns rather than do Wonder Woman once. Second Tier hero Green Lantern is next on the slate ahead of her. That's how bad it is.

So, go go get it! I got mine!

Here is something I'm wondering: how does everyone here feel about female superheroes? Because truth be told most of the time they are still dressed like Malibu Barbie, and most of the time they are drawn by men. Empowering? Anti-feminist? What's the story?

Also, how do you feel about female anti-heroes? Kill Bill for example.

On this subject I would very highly recommend Elizabeth Whitney's exploration of these themes in Wonder Woman: The Musical, but I'm really curious as to what everyone's opinion is.

@kelsium: Well I feel a bad one to comment on this since I am not into comic books at all. But just from a distance I would have to agree, female comic book hero's seem like nothing but heaving boobs to me. On the other hand I fucking LOVE the Kill Bills. I own both of them and watch them when I'm nervous about something and need to feel pumped up and powerful.

Though if you meant in the comic book world, I really like Tulip from Preacher. Does she count as a superhero?

@bluebears: I think it's interesting (bearing in mind that I don't know all that much about comic books) which motivations (revenge, vigilantism, etc.) make a good superhero. The only ass-kicking lady portrayals that have ever worked for me are the ones who are following personal revenge by going the femme fatal route. I guess I feel like the feminine vigilante either doesn't work for me, or has never been well done.

@kelsium: @Macloserboy: I won't say the industry has moved past this 100%, but when I see this complaint, more than often what people remember is the 90s era of comics, which was the 'extreme' era.

I think people would be surprised what direction comics have gone, especially in the past few years.

@kelsium: Maybe, in the same vein as Shannon was saying, the closest thing to effective female vigilantes that I've seen are Veronica Mars and Jennifer Garner's character on Alias. But those weren't "superheroes" just smart ladies.

@kelsium: I personally really like Simone's take on WW. I have been nothing but disappointed in any X-Men comic I read, despite hearing people crow about how feminist it is. NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME EMMA FROST IS A REAL CHARACTER. She is a fantasy come to "life". I have yet to see her do something not sexy. Everything she does is just sexy, and she has no personality other than "sexy". I notice a theme here... :D

I don't care much for superhero comics, because I find them dull. I know who's going to win. It's so rare for a superhero to lose - it happens, though (Captain America, is he still dead?).

I have enjoyed many a comic in my day, and I love them a lot, but I have trouble finding ones that really appeal to me and don't make me roll my eyes. Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Lenore are still way up there, as is The Crow and usually Dawn. I have a lot of issues with Linsner, but... I do like his stuff most of the time.

Support her. Every vote counts. Maybe if the demand is high enough, live action will be next. I don't see the problem with making a live action movie, if they strike the right balance between action and intellect. I have always seen Wonder Woman as the midpoint between Superman and Batman -- cerebral, yet good in a fight, and unafraid to mix it up with anyone on any level. She'd be a blast on the big screen.
