Most of the celebs seemed to play it relatively safe, fashion-wise, but there were a few highlights.

The Silver Fox delivers both silver and fox. As if we expected anything less.

Carrie Underwood is the beautiful prom queen who just keeps on getting prettier and prettier after high school. Dammit.

Eva Mendes' dress is adorable, and she looks adorable in it.

Ricki Lake's little black dress is simple but stylish. Go Ricki, and so on and so forth.

There's something a little off about The Rock's suit, isn't there? Like he's dressed as a chaperone at a fancy middle school dance?
It really doesn't matter what Terrence Howard wears. I can't look at him without thinking of baby wipes.

I love Melinda McGraw's dress, if only because it reminds me of something my Midge doll wore in 1987. I mean that in the very best way.

I love the color of Kate Flannery's dress, but I'm not sure about the cut. And the lipstick is a bit too matchy-matchy, I'm afraid.

Every time I see a picture of Jenna Fischer on the red carpet, she looks incredibly uncomfortable. This is no exception. The dress is pretty, though, and she's rocking one of the trends of the evening: big hair.

I don't know what Creed from the Office is doing on the red carpet, but I LOVE IT. I'm hoping a story comes out later tonight that details how Creed stole Anderson Cooper's tie and sold it on Ebay for 20 dollars and a pack of cigarettes or something of the sort.

Laila Ali looks lovely in this purple gown. Purple, like sparkles and big hair, was also a noticeable trend for this event.

Leona Lewis, as you can see, hopped aboard the Purple Train as well. I'm not so sure about this dress.

Debi Mazar's dress is really cute, but the fit seems a bit off, doesn't it?

Neil Patrick Harris knows how to suit up, obviously.

Annalynne McCord's hero is clearly Kate Gosselin.

<![CDATA[Mutual Admiration, Frocks At Noble Awards]]> The Noble Awards honors "outstanding charities and celebrity activism." So much for virtue being its own reward! But last night, at the Beverly Hills Hotel, the stars looked virtuous - and chic! - indeed. Most of them, that is.

Love love love Nicole Richie's Lubitsch-worthy bombshell.

It's unfortunate that for the rest of our lives, whenever I see Nancy O'Dell, I'll just think you got Austin Scarlett kicked off? For Wendy Pepper?

I kind of respect it when people like Monica just won't let jersey go because it's too damn comfortable. I'm in this camp.

I'm instinctively suspicious of the calculated Cali-ease of a white suit, but I'll admit that Teri Hatcher's looking comfy in her skin, which is at least part of the battle.

Uh-oh: Lori Loughlin takes a trip to frump city. Come back!

She brought this jacket back for Laila Ali as a souvenir.

I might be able to get behind AnnaLynne McCord's dress if her peculiar hair choice didn't make one question...everything we know.

Rachel Nichols' LBD is a breath of fresh air.

<![CDATA[Now Here's An Event: Women In Sports Awards!]]> The 30th Annual Salute To Women In Sports Awards, at NYC's Waldorf-Astoria, was an uncommon red carpet: lots of awesome ladies, yes, but also some curious duds and, yes, some unusually comfy shoes.

Squash player Natalie Grainger: First clue this isn't a regular red carpet...

And the second: Softball player Jessica Mendoza!

Most people played it understandably safe: Aimee Mullins was a notable exception!

Can you guess what Wendy Hilliard's sport is? Rhythmic Gymnastics!

Laila Ali sports one of the evening's loveliest.

Ole! Golfer Brittany Lincicome.

Luge athlete Cameron Myler - words I don't get to write enough on this beat - goes for classic elegance.

Olympic runner Jackie Joyner-Kersee is obviously only willing to sacrifice so much comfort for fashion!

Skateboarder Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins: curiouser and curiouser.

Michelle Quan, a consistent class act. This is amazing.

Billie Jean King, possibly in Merrills.

<![CDATA[There's No Boxing Day For Olympic Women In Beijing]]> There's an article on the Reuters Blogs today asking whether women should be allowed to box in the London Olympics in 2012. To be honest, I didn't realize women were not allowed to box. They can weightlift, run, dive play basketball, field hockey, do judo, fence and participate the Modern Pentathalon, but they can't box? It wasn't always so: Apparently there was women's boxing in the 1904 Olympics. And the International Boxing Association women’s commission vice-chairwoman, Bettan Andersson, believes having women’s boxing at the Olympics would help improve the overall image of the sport: "If women come in, people will feel the sport is more common, not so dangerous, and that would be a very good thing for the image of boxing," she says.

As a fan of boxing, I have to agree. I used to think boxing was just a brutal, savage spectacle of two people beating the crap out of each other. And it is! But I've learned that it's more than that.

It's a sport of endurance, skill, strategy and footwork. It's not brainless swinging — that's a bar brawl. Boxers train and think and outwit and scheme. And yes, brutally pummel each other. But when it comes to not letting women punch women, something stinks. Is this about females being delicate flowers? Is this about women not messing up their beautiful faces? I can't understand why women would be allowed to do Taekwondo in the Olympics, but not box. If you've ever seen Michelle Rodriguez in Girlfight or Laila Ali throw a jab, you know that an incredibly strong woman brings new meaning to the word "knockout".
