Back in the 70s, we'd watch the Dick Clark Awards because they mostly covered popular forms of music, so you didn't have all of the different genres, as you get from the Grammys and it was a place to see bigger productions than those on the variety shows.
Then some time in the mid to late eighties, they became kitschy and considered uncool, but now thanks to the blogosphere, cocooning and online video, they're apparently back in vogue.
i love me some miss jackson, seen her in concert, but GIRL, WHAT IS UP WITH THOSE PANTS? are they even pants? are you channeling peter pan as an homage to neverland? please explain.
Just to be sure, because the images look grainy, Lady Gaga was wearing a giant wang, right? I really hope I'm seeing that right because, if so, she is extra AWESOME. I don't even like pop music but I love her way too much.
When Lady Gaga first came out I wasn't a huge fan of her, and I thought she was very weird. But after seeing her perform my opinion completely changed.... she's an amazing performer, and she's unique and interesting to watch.
@JenniJS: I feel the same way. I was so irritated by the constant paparazzi photos of her and just wanted her to put on some damn pants already. But, now that I've seen her, I admire her vocal talent, creativity and well, Madonnaness.
@midwestdesigner: My first reaction was her Freddie Mercuryness. (The first half is completely Madonna-y, but the second dramatic half screams Queen to me.)
Effing Lady Gaga is so great. Playing the piano by breaking bottles on it? So good. Wait, strike that-- playing a BURNING piano by breaking bottles on it...
JLo's facial expression when she exited the stage was PRICELESS. Someone was going to get a serious beatdown. She looked totally and completely furious.
I get that Rhianna wants to be edgy, but she just looked like a boring Judas Priest/Leeloo (The Fifth Element) love child. That is not current or edgy.
Janet Jackson's medley gave me goosebumps. sigh. My childhood has been given a shout out today.
As for Rihanna's outfit, all I can think about are all the cats in the world who are going crazy trying to figure out where the red dot is coming from and where it goes.
I am almost embarrassed to admit that Lady GaGa has won me over with her pantsless ways. Her music is insanely catchy and her shows and videos that are practically performance art, they are so sublimely odd. I love her so much and I am so happy she exists.

I also hate it when artists sing about shoes they're not wearing. At least tape some red duct tape to the bottoms! Make 'em believe!
