    Is it pathetic that I'm so happy for Jacqueline from Real Housewives of New Jersey? She seems like a genuinely kind person and I felt terrible for her because she'd had four miscarriages in a row. I really have got to stop feeling strong emotions about people I don't actually know.

    @R-Star: It's not pathetic. I'm happy for her too--her monologue on the show about getting out her maternity tops and then having to put them away again broke my heart. And this is coming from someone with no desire for behbehs.

    Just out of curiosity, how can you determine whether or not someone commits suicide (as opposed to it being an unfortunate accident) from an autopsy? I don't get how you can figure that out without knowing what the person was thinking when he died.

    @Sputnik_Sweetheart: What I'd like to know is, are they classifying it as murder or accident? Accident vs. suicide would probably be hard to determine with self-strangulation, but murder would be more easily figured out, right?

    @SaveGasRideACowboy: I don't think there's really any way to answer that without talking to him. Transing gender doesn't necessarily do anything to change who you're attracted to. But, not every FTM (I would hazard a guess that most FTMs) do not identify as a "straight male" after the transition. Some identify as transmen, some as queer... etc etc I could go on. Don't try to fit it into a box, a lot of the time it won't fit.

    It makes me really happy that most of the news outlets are refering to Chaz as he/him. Although there was one "Cher's daughter to undergo sex change" from MSNBC.


    When even TMZ knows better than to use the wrong pronouns you'd think MSNBC would be ashamed to do otherwise. But I guess not. Wouldn't want to blow the minds of the business world I guess.


    I wish him the best of luck in transitioning.

    @Lizard in the Wires, is movin' to Fresno! Any Jezzies need ...: Perhaps it might have been confusion as to what to refer to someone who is pre-op? Still, hopefully as transpeople become more visible in society, these pronoun issues will go away and reporters will just know the correct thing to say.

    @Lizard in the Wires, is movin' to Fresno! Any Jezzies need ...: Somebody please educate me on this one, because I'm not sure of the correct answer on this:

    I understand someone transitioning from female to male should be referred to with the male pronoun. But is it offensive for MSNBC to call Chaz "Cher's daughter"? I mean, at birth, he was considered Cher's daughter, and so I understand wanting to use that as a way to clarify who someone is. But would that be rude? I don't know any transpeople in real life, so I'm not sure what the etiquette is in that situation.

    @deltabella: Once Chaz asked to be called "Chaz" and "he" all gender specific nouns change. Chaz is Cher's son. He has been Cher's son ever since he identified as male.

    @Ailanthus-altissima: But that's not exactly fair -- people know that Cher had a daughter named Chastity. In a headline, I think it's appropriate to say "Cher's daughter to undergo gender reassignment" because otherwise it'd be "Cher's son" and not only imply that Cher had a son we never knew about but that he was becoming a woman, not the other way around.


    "Cher's adult child" would work too, but headlines are supposed to capture attention. As long as the article/story was respectful (and clear in explaining gender reassignment to the many people who don't "get" it), I don't know that it was a problem.

    @Pennyfeather: Oh yeah, that's definitely the case. I am sure MSNBC wanted to have a headline that was easily and quickly understandable to someone just skimming. I wanted to add that as an addendum, but decided against it because I couldn't word it correctly. I am sure there was a better way to say it than "Cher's daughter," but I couldn't think of anything quickly enough. You're right that "child" might not be the best.

    We need more gender neutral adult offspring pronouns.

    I admire Chastity (Chaz) and that choice a lot and think it takes so much courage to go through with that sort of transition.


    The other part of me though, got oddly sad for a minute that has felt trapped inside her gender and won't be a woman anymore. Is that weird? I don't even know this person!

    @Chocolate Sex Bunny: No, I think it's reasonable to feel very bad for a person who through no fault of their own ends up in a sort of gender purgatories. Just imagining the years of their lives spent uncomfortable.


    Honestly though, Chaz Bono is one of the people I would feel the least sad for. Lucky for him he has access to wealthy parents allowing him the opportunity to change. I'd give more of my sympathy to the number of people who don't have the financial resources to become what they feel they are. Especially the transgendered people who end up joining the sex trade to earn the money to transition.

    I posted a link about Chaz Bono on FB a little while ago, and congratulated him for his courage. One of my conservative friends left a comment: "Her."


    I replied: He prefers to be recognized as "him." And, soon enough, will actually be a "him."

    My husband is a transman from SouthAmerica, where Transmen are quite rare...then he comes to Toronto and Boom! Lots and lots of transmen....there is something fishy going on.


    I am surely going to feminist hell for saying this but...seems to me for some people, the allure of the Testosterone and the label of Trans is just too tempting...Yeah I know...I am going to hell. LOL

    @Quecchua (Subversive Unschooling Witch in Toronto): I'm guessing there is 1) a doctor or doctors in Toronto that are known for their skills in reassignment surgery 2) once a few trans folk find themselves accepted in the community, news spreads, esp. online. And big cities are more GBLT-friendly anyway . . .


    I wonder how the Canadian health care system treats these sorts of surgeries?

    @Treeless: I think it does to an extent, and it might differ from province to province... and I remember somebody saying that the province of Alberta (surprisingly) covers either a certain amount of either the operation or hormones. This is just what I vaguely recall hearing from a pre-op trans acquaintance of mine who was considering moving to Alberta for that reason.

    @Treeless: @poires et poireaux: I believe OHIP (Ontario's health plan) has partial coverage for gender reassignment. Also, the LBGT community has a strong presence around Toronto, which goes a bit hand in hand with the city's great appreciation of acceptance and diversity. I've been here for five years now, and honestly to me it just makes sense that many transgendered people would gravitate towards a place like this.
