It never ceases to amaze me how many dance styles that India has (although it probably shouldn't as it is a big country with a large population). They are all so beautiful, expressive, and unique, too.

Oh yes, yes, National Geographic did a mini-doc on this. It's a fascinating process of selection and a curious life, no doubt, but I hear they often come out on the other side quite emotionally stunted and have difficulty finding partners because of local superstitions.

I've been reading about these girls lately. They're chosen where they're 2 or 3, they aren't schooled, so they're left with very few resources once they're no longer goddess-worthy...when they're too old, as in 13 or 14... It is an honor to their families to be chosen, and I can imagine most American little girls would squee if they were chosen as a goddess (me included) but i think this practice in it's reality is quite hard on these young women.

Aren't these the little girls who are treated as goddesses until they menstruate and then they are cast aside and they don't have many chances because after their goddess status has been shirked they are considered unlucky?
