1) Yay Poland, per usual.

2) Polish priests, in my experience, are totally different from American Catholic priests. One of my favorite times in Warsaw was during the student festival, when a huge parade of students dancing in the back of flatbed trucks went by a group of priests. They all immediately started dancing to our music.

3) Catholicism in Poland is MUCH more woman-friendly than (again, in my experience) Catholicism in America. Mary is a BIG deal there, and held in nearly as high regard as Jesus.

4) The anti-birth control policy still sucks like HELL.

He wants to make sure there's no "sense of guilt" in sex? The Catholic church is the reason I still sometimes have issues with enjoying sex. You can't teach children that sex is a sin until they get married, then expect them to completely let go of that and embrace the joy of sex as soon as they say "I do". The church needs to change its stance that sex is bad unless you're trying to reproduce if they expect couples to not feel guilty about enjoying it.

I realize that this is not the point, but the translated excerpt is killing me. It reminds me of the cat commercial from yesterday. "A husband is obliged (after reaching his own satisfaction) to caress his wife's labia and clitoris until she reaches an orgasm....Woman's sexuality is different from the man's one.." Seks in other languages not so seksy, akshually.

I'm twelve.

Anyway, I think this is pretty great. My heathen self has always had this pre-concieved notion that religious couples didn't get to really enjoy their sexuality because of the overarching attitude of the church is that sex is sinful unless you're trying to procreate. So it's nice to know that married couples are in fact able to enjoy eachother and not feel bad or dirty about it. Seks is Good!!

@MissMoneypenny: yeah this whole thing is def an outgrowth of Theology of the Body movement. there are a lot of them out there. mainly men! Personally the theology of the body makes me nauseous because it is based on gender complementarity and so aggressively heterosexual it makes me shiver. JPII was progressive in some ways, but his "feminism" (he wrote a lot about the dignity of the working woman, the "genius" of women, etc.) is still rooted in insane essentialism.

Aww, I think this is a good thing. Not only is the Church supporting the use of one's God-given body and propensity towards orgasms, but this is a good way to put sex into a Catholic perspective, if that's the lens through which you already view the world. Much better than saying "don't do it till marriage, and even then, you won't enjoy it."

I'm friends with a few (far more liberal) Polish women and I do hope this makes an impact. While some may find it questionable that a man sworn to celibacy is writing this, this is a step in the right direction.

His statement that you don't have to have a heart condition to be a cardiologist, compares sex to some sort of illness/disease. So you're the doctor, and I'm doing the Horizantal Heart Attack with my God-ordained husband? And don't cardiologists try to get people to NOT have heart conditions? So is he trying to prevent me from having sex?

Priests are not good at sex or analogies.

There is an incredibly creepy website called 'Sex According to the Word of God' that I stumbled across at Christmas that goes into this but with a much less positive vibe. I kind of hope I'm the only person who has ever read it's rantings.

It's nice to see a Catholic country/community taking steps towards being a bit more sex positive especially as a Christian/lapsed Catholic myself.

@nessalicious: I always felt that Catholics were quite sex-positive, at least where married couples were concerned. For some reason, I find it a lot creepier when Protestants attempt to be sex-positive. But I can't put my finger on why. It's like they suffered horrible attacks of the giggles the whole time they were writing the thing.

@tomatoheart: I think that's part of the whole deal, though. If you're in that state of mind where you accept the possibility of getting pregnant as something that's not always completely in your control, and you're adamant about Natural Family Planning (not the rhythm method), you don't stress about getting pregnant. For me, it was a huge weight off of my shoulders.

@7states: Yeah, I agree. It seems like this book is actually teaching a relatively healthy view of sexuality - that it's not dirty and everyone gets to come. It sounds a little essentialist, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

@ucelluccia: It's interesting, because they put the same sort of emphasis on Natural Family Planning. It becomes a husband and wife project to take your temperature, keep your charts up-to-date, etc., instead of the wife's job to fill a prescription, take a pill, and suffer the side effects of the hormones.

@AtomiClash: When you go to Pre Cana, or "Marriage Camp," as we called it, they spend a half a day teaching you how to feel your cervix, track your cervical fluids and take your temperature to keep up with what stage of your cycle you're in. It was pretty awesome, actually.

@morninggloria: My parents totally convinced me that god was watching everything I did AND that these bad things were somehow video taped and would be shown to everyone in the afterlife to show all my sins. This ended up being quite disturbing to me when I figured out masturbation. I distinctly remember covering my face with a washcloth so he couldn't see me and then at some point i decided enough was enough and I flipped god off while I was orgasming and that was that and I stopped feeling guilty.
