I saw the movie last night and loved it more than all of the other Trek movies (even "Khan"). The special effects were pulled off well and never resembled a video game (unlike the Stars Wars prequels) and I was amazed by how well the newbies embodied the characters (I knew that Bones was going to appear in his first scene just by hearing his complaints), and of course, my hero Simon Pegg was a fine Scotty. It was also hard to hear Nimoy speak without getting choked up.
This elderly soul watched the original back in the late 60's cause my older brother was a geek and loved the show. The entire fam eventually liked it.
Always has a soft spot for ST and I definitely plan on seeing this on the big screen, especially since Eric "Hello Big Boy" Bana is the villain. Slup-a-licious.
@Rose.Selavy.Needs.A.Drink: I know. We'll see, but I'm king of laughing at "Eric Bana made to look ugly." There is no universe that would permit that, parallel or otherwise.
I have a feeling I will end up seeing this sometime over the weekend, as I am going to visit a HUGE Trek fan. I'm not a big Trekkie, but I mostly like Abrams and Lindelof, so I'm hopeful.
I'm the Adult Child of Trekkie Parents, and I can't even believe how excited they are for this. Thanks to them, I know all the intricacies of every series, every movie, and I even learned to read from the Next Generation opening credits. Needless to say, I hope they enjoy that midnight showing.
WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS?! I know this is an homage to the 60s version, but seriously -- if you can update the technology and make it an alternate universe, make it a universe with decent female characters, please.
In the first scene with Ohura, where she stands around in a miniskirt meekly asking "please stop" to the dudes who beat the shit out of a guy defending her honor, all I could think was "for the love of GOD, Starbuck would NEVER do that."
@girly: That was completely awesome. The part where "gritty" bones comes in at the "tough" bit in the song where Luke Perry was introduced was a really nice touch.
Guys, this movie ruuuuuuuuules. Go even if you know literally nothing about Star Trek. It's a great blockbuster entertaining movie, and it deserves to make tons of money, as opposed to something like Wolverine. Support good filmmaking!
I CANNOT. FUCKING. WAIT. I'm actually holding off to see it for a week or so until the initial furor dies down, so dorky-ass me and my dorky-ass boyfriend can sit in a quiet theatre and giggle and hold hands. We are DORKS.
I've loved all things Trek since I was a little kid, so this is Kind Of A Big Deal to me.
@tscheese: This is my Mother's Day request--to see Star Trek. True story. While I did not see the original series when it aired, I did see EVERY. EPISODE. IN. SYNDICATION. I also had irrational little-girl crushes on Kirk and Chekov. And the Fonz. I loved, loved, loved the cheese and camp and space-themed storylines as a kid. I am very excited to see this indeed.
May you and your dorky boyfriend be the happiest dorks who ever dorked!
I've never been into Star Trek, but this actually looks appealing to me-- but I have to wonder if the elements that make it look awesome to me are also some kind of heresy to the true fans.
@inabook: I'm not a really hardcore fan, but I am a fan, and I loved it. I think it's got a great appeal to both fans and non-fans. At bottom, it's a top notch action/space movie. But it's also kind of thrilling to see the crew from the original getting together, in a way that introduces the possibility of something old but also new (the alternate reality setup).

Only, speaking as someone who's seen the movie, 90210 had more complex female characters. And that's NOT supposed to be praise.
