    @NefariousNewt: This makes sense to me. I am not well-versed on Korean culture (so someone who is, feel free to school me!), but I can see Bil being able to say in kind a bro to bro way with KJ "Yeah, well, you know how women can be sometimes." Not RIGHT, of course, but whatever it takes to build some rapport and get those journalists out of there....

    In reply to Detained Journalist Makes Contact, And Michael Jackson Wanted To Help
    I'm probably going to get in trouble for saying this, but why must we bring Michael Jackson into this? What is going in North Korea are serious human rights abuses. The North Korean citizens are essentially Kim Jong Il's prisoners. Kim Jong Il has missiles pointed at Seoul and Hawaii. NK are keeping South Korean, American, and Japanese citizens hostage. I get that Michael Jackson is an icon and a legend, but there are many very important issues going in the world that didn't go away when MJ died. In my opinion, trying to relate MJ to those issues, trivializes them.

    This is not a criticism of Anna, Jezebel, or his fans, more on the MSM that have put Iran, the economy, North Korea, etc. on the back burner in favor of Michael Jackson, and any other celebrity stories.

    @Sputnik_Sweetheart: I can kind of see Michael Jackson's point though. Kim Jong Il is obviously completely nuts, and has obsessions with expensive things and likes to be worshipped and feel special. Cognac! Golf! Musicals! These are the things that KJI values, and I can see how the biggest pop star from the Enemy Lands bowing to him and giving him a private concert would work out, diplomatically.

    @Sputnik_Sweetheart: I have all the sympathy in the world for these two women and hope they are released soon, but they are not hostages. They violated the law of North Korea, and although we may not agree with it, it is their right to enforce it. Ignoring that fact doesn't make it go away. Lisa Ling did a very critical documentary on North Korea for National Geographic so Laura knew going into this that she'd be a high-value prize if they caught her. What has happened since makes a lot of sense in that light, though that doesn't make it right.

    @pixiesticks: We don't really know if they broke North Korea's laws. Lee and Ling originally denied that they entered North Korea and could be falsely admitting it now because they see that as the only way to help their situation. North Korea does have a history of kidnapping people outside of their borders.

    @Sputnik_Sweetheart: Yes, it does have that history, though that would mean crossing into China to grab them. China would not be happy about that. Still, I wonder about Laura Ling going into this with a great big target on her back. Seems like that would call for extra precautions. Not blaming her, just saying she was taking an extraordinarily big risk even getting close to the border.

    @That-Dude
    : @cocobanal: I suspect that what she said was scripted and someone was monitoring the conversation. North Korea isn't going to let either of them phone home just to be nice. This is the equivalent of those hostage videos where hostages "confess" to violations of law. They're carefully controlling the situation and I don't think you can assume that Laura Ling was voluntarily confessing to violating the law.

    From my brief research, only guided tour travel is allowed in North Korea, and independent travel is strictly prohibited. This doesn't even broach the subject of independent journalists.

    So, they are guilty of a crime. Is the punishment reasonable, not by our set of standards and the charges were most likely trumped up.
