I don't doubt that the family as a whole is closer now than it was 15 years ago, but I don't know that Katherine truly understands what Michael's best interests are, as opposed to the family's best interests.

I'd say most parents look out for the interests of all their children. If one child is successful, they worry and look out for the other kids, and often expect the more successful child to look after the others. I have dealt with the same thing with my parents and sister and I'm sure others have as well.
