this is probably off-topic (sorry hortense, i don't know where else to put it), but i just have to say looking at some of these celebrities, is there no place anymore that isn't flooded with celebrities with little reason to be there? yeah, john cusack and susan sarandon and oprah and beyonce and bruce and bono and sarah jessica parker (i met her at a political even years and years ago) were all notably involved in the campaign, bt who are some of these people, and why are they there? I'm srpised phoebe price wasn't there -- though i'm sre she tried.
it's seeming a little like paris hilton, nick and linda hogan, and kim kardashian going to sundance. another place to party and be seen. takes some of the hope-y-ness and change-y-ness out of the day. ugh.
Earlier in the comments I took issue with some commenters who were asking why Rachel Leigh Cook was there. While I don't think I could name a single film that she's been in, I do know that she campaigned for Obama.
Maybe she's not relevant as an actress but I do appreciate her participation in the campaign, which in my opinion is more worthwhile than being an actress, relevant or not.
I sincerely hope that the attendees contributed in some way to the campaign effort, because just showing up to the party to get photographed after all the work's been done is pretty vulgar.
@pixie: yeah, i see your point and i hope you are correct, but a LOT of regluar people contributed serious time and effort but didn't get invited to black tie galas or the inauguration. and i don't accept attending major fundraising events to be a real contributor -- i do consider people like america ferrara a real contributor as she made appearances at malls talking to voters, and probably more. notice there are no pictures of her, but jlo is everywhere.
Not having just tons of Ball experience, maybe I'm missing something, but...
Wouldn't Anne Hathaway be tripping over the long train thing in the front of her dress? Or is the plan to sweep it to the side and let it trail (drag) gracefully to the side?
Because if it's a Grace thing, yeah. I don't have that.
There seems to have been an epidemic of ill-fitting bodices-- Amy Brenneman, Anne Hathaway, Alfre Woodard. If you're going to spend a small fortune on a gown, shouldn't you also spend a smidge more to have the alterations done properly?
Oh, and that's not Kate Walsh. Kate Walsh was looking fierce last night.
i'm trying to figure out how amy brenneman got to the ball without the satin getting wrinkled. did she walk the entire way? did she botox the dress or something? (i'm not even going to mention her alien forehead, but whatever...i just did.)
satin is lovely, but all those young starlets who wear it wrinkled on the red carpet look ridiculous.
Everyone looks eh to me - except Michelle, who looks amazing in everything, because her spirit shines through (jeez - one day in and I'm already a cheeseball). Yay!
Kate Walsh's dress is reading very Jetsons formal to me. Perhaps her dress for the Purple Ball wasn't ready and she was forced to wear her Air and Space Ball gown instead?
I thought Michelle Obama looked exquisite and I'm utterly baffled by all the "unflattering" comments I've been hearing on the other blogs and sites. Apparently having hips makes you a monster. It's utterly tragic that after everything we hear day in and day out about eating disorders in this country, people are still picking apart an exceptionally brilliant and intelligent woman based on her appearances and we are still trying to pass off curves as evil. I applaud her for not playing down her hips (although honestly, I must be the only who doesn't see the unflattering nature of the gown). If you've got 'em, flaunt 'em.
@EkaterinaBallerina: What I didn't like about it is the froof around her waist just above her hips. It makes the dress look boxy there instead of just having her waist nip in and her hips come out at the natural line. So I'm thinking the froof at the waist was to make her hips look smaller. But she doesn't need that.

Also, I think the President won over every woman's heart last night when the first words out of his mouth were "How good looking is my wife?"
Sigh.
