Today's Special was a big fav in our house. And, Canadian Jezzies, remember Under the Umbrella Tree? Even after it went off the air, my mom still made us Holly Hoppers (aka smoothies), and one time a few years ago I was in a mall in Ottawa, and my mom goes, "Oh hey, that's Holly from Under the Umbrella Tree." I almost fainted I was so excited.

I found seasons 2 and 3 of Alex Mack on Megavideo. I have been watching those episodes for the last two weeks. It makes me feel the same way I did when I was a kid: I need to wear more hats and want telekinesis. Plus Alex's situations are nothing but ordinary. There is no one interested in her life; her town is boring and there are no huge special guest stars. Clarissa was the same way. Shows aren't made that way anymore.

@Alys Brangwin is a Tar Heel bred: The Secret World of Alex Mack was my absolute favorite show. I wanted to BE her.

Gosh I miss old television. I guess we all grew up to like Arrested Development, Firefly, The Office, and 30 Rock. I fear for today's kids. It's all saccharine life lessons and bright pretty people with no substance.

But really, the nineties had this kind of manic "alternative/edgy" energy, where it seemed like a lot of entertainment for young people really tried to push the envelope as far as it would go. Remember Roundhouse and how freeform and fun it was? Remember how fucking scary it was to watch Are You Afraid Of The Dark? Remember how hip and cool it felt to watch Clarissa parade around in giant boots and colorful haphazard fashions?

Mass media and multimedia was new and untapped and vast and exciting. The Internet was just beginning to take off. Alternative, indie musicians were suddenly mainstream. The dot-com bubble was yet to burst, and it seemed that the geek would inherit the earth. It was a REALLY fun time to come of age - the fashion, the music, the no-holds-barred FUN of it all. Technology was brilliant and sparkly new. It was a fun time to wear battered silly clothes and act like a nerd.

The 00's have been...well, a lot more materialistic and insipid, I think. "Is our children learning". Conspicuous consumerism. Mass multimedia provides 24/7/365 availability of paparazzi shots. American Idol and America's Next Top Model: anyone can be a star, even those with no discernible talent! Then you had the bling, giant fucking logos on everything, aspirational lifestyles. A lot of the wild creativity of the nineties seemed to be kind of stifled because the mainstream had appropriated some of the more innovative, edgy aspects of alt-culture, and sanitized it and put skinny jeans on it and too much bronzer.

I wonder what the next decade will bring in mass media and multimedia and entertainment programming for youth. Probably we'll be too busy eating boiled rocks and living in cardboard shantytowns to care.

@tscheese: I think there'll be a huge backlash against the 00s. I mean, fashion has done a Magical Mystery Tour of the 20th century in the past two or three years. The 90s are starting to come back. I think we'll see a lot of 90s nostaligia in terms of aesthetic, but the shows will probably be a bit more sophisticated and less freeform. It won't be as fun, but hopefully it'll be intelligent.

At least, that's what I hope.

I'm sort of glad for the kids who love really horrible things like Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers. It speaks to the fact that they're still kids and kids have kind of crappy tastes sometimes. My pet peeve is parents who unload their own musical and pop culture tastes onto their children, so you're left debating the merits of the new Department of Eagles album with an 8-year-old in tight pants.

@katie.scarlett.o'hara: Funnily enough, my mom would watch it with me every night (when my brother was old enough, he did too). She said it was to make sure it wasn't too scary, but, in retrospect, it was clearly because she LOVED the show.

@LaComtesse: My dad was really strict about what I was allowed to watch and my little brother and I would watch this and if my dad would come in, we'd have to change really fast to the news or something. Other shows I loved because they where taboo in our house where Tales from the Crypt and Unsolved Mysteries. The intros to these shows seriously creep me out still.

@NowhereGirl: OMG UNSOLVED MYSTERIES!! I used to watch it every afternoon during the summer when they played it on Lifetime, along with Golden Girls, and Mad About You. I think it was a segment on Unsolved Mysteries about the Romanovs that started my lifelong fascination with Anastasia.

I'm so happy that I wasn't the only one obsessed with the Romanovs. I even recall finding some site years ago that had scanned and posted letters and diary entries written by the girls. A lot of it was in russian, but I spent hours trying to make out the writing when it was english. I was a weird kid.

Remember when they used to do Nick at Night and play I Love Lucy and The Brady Bunch? I freaking loved I Love Lucy when I was little, probably more than anything else on Nickelodeon or Disney.

@katie.scarlett.o'hara: Other than the big shows (Pete & Pete, Salute Your Shorts, Clarissa), Nick at Night had the single greatest pop-culture effect on my formative years. I remember seeing it several years later and they'd swapped out I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, Get Smart, etc, for stuff like Taxi. And the magic was over. I think I Love Lucy and Get Smart were my two favorite shows as a kid, other than that flirtation with Night Court in 3rd grade.

@katie.scarlett.o'hara: That was back when Nick at Nite was good. I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Dick Van Dyke, Get Smart, even Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Their lineups since then really haven't impressed me much, although there are a few exceptions (Night Court and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air leap to mind). Ah, the good ol' days.
