    After seeing two different neurologists, none of whom could figure out why I was in horrendous, screaming, suicidal pain that painkillers couldn't touch, my mom Googled my symptoms and figured out that I was leaking spinal fluid.

    @CoalMineCanary: Holy crap! That sounds worse than mine- two different ER visits diagnosed me with an ulcer, despite NONE of the symptoms fitting. I sent my test results to an aunt who's a nurse and she came back with pericarditis - an infection of the lining of the heart. My doctor had said he tested for it, but not according to any of the paperwork he gave me. Also, I had a CT but the doctor made it very clear she was only looking for pulmonary embolisms. Fortunately, it went away without treatment.

    That's unbelievable that Jessica's doctors didn't test her for Crohn's. When I hear that she's a teenager with those symptoms, Crohn's is immediately at the top of my list (and I'm only a lowly med student). She sounds like an awesomely smart girl!

    Way to go Jessica! I always remember in my intro to abnormal psych class the professor saying how we would all be likely to diagnose ourselves at some point but that it should be taken with a grain of salt.


    Now I think I have seasonal affective disorder because I work indoors, catatonic episodes upon awakening and a mania for Luke Wilson.

    Interesting. Is it common for women to want to keep a child but abort because they don't have the money? I definitely think a lot of women are pressured to have their child adopted when they would make a great mother if they had the money.

    @Kate2.18: Sounds like the Israeli foundation "Friends of Efrat" which works to prevent Jewish women from getting abortions by providing diapers and food and stuff. Frankly, it freaks the shit out of me.

    @Kate2.18: I haven't reviewed the bill, but the Pregnancy Support Act sounds like a step in the right direction. I can imagine that some women do want to keep their baby, but are unable to afford it.


    In general, our country is so stingy and difficult with mothers and children that I'm willing to take anything we can get at this point.

    @deeemer: Yes, exactly. Helping people, especially children, is a good idea.


    I think it's very worrisome that the reaction to "let's help mothers out" is often "but they could be getting an abortion instead". This is about choice, people. Some women will choose abortion. For others it's adoption. For some women the choice is keeping the pregnancy. It would be better to see more focus on prevention, but helping struggling moms out isn't a bad idea.

    @Dancingfrog: While I agree with you, you have to recognise that the reason people react suspiciously is because so many "lets help mothers out" programs have been run by disingenuous religious groups who blow smoke up the woman's ass until the moment she cannot terminate or gives birth- at which point their supplies and diapers and support dry up completely and they are demonised in the press and the check-out line as welfare mothers.

    @jemandtheholograms: My understanding is that pathologists often give the extra slides to the patient. There's nothing particularly hazardous about fixed sections of intestinal tissue.
