Aw, I'm a little disappointed that Kanye didn't actually say that. When I first read about it, I thought he was intentionally joking, and watching people get all up in arms about it was a neat trick. It's a nice, meta joke.

And for all his clumsy metaphors, he's got a damn good point.

I have to say, I can really relate to what Uma was trying to say about being told your pretty at a young age. Going through my early teens I dealt with a lot of attention for my looks or developing early and I was incredibly self conscious at school dealing with unwanted (and often inappropriate) attention from guys and jealousy from girls, it really made me withdraw within myself. Also, relatives and other adults would make comments like "you're so pretty you should be a model" etc. Didn't really leave much room to tell them about the science fair I was working on or how my oboe practice was going. Thankfully, I had parents that placed much more emphasis on education and supported whatever I wanted to do, but for some reason to this day when someone compliments me on appearance I question their motives.

Also, look at this way: you learned early lessons, suck though they might.
You could have been a "late bloomer" (with some gleefully continuing to point out your "ugly flaws", with which you generally agreed, since your self-esteem in our lookist society had been whacked at since birth) with absolutely no idea what you were getting yourself into.

@Rooo sez BISH PLZ: I understood the they was the aunt and uncle - who have only been around for a couple of epis (I think - I don't watch the show). So he was saying his kids aren't overworked and the aunt and uncle are in no position to know.

@Erode: I'm getting worried about Kanye's emotional state. It seems in many of his recent post he's expressed regret that so many people think he's a colossal asshole. Which of course, he brought on himself. But I find his ridiculousness charming so I could never hate on him. Oh, AND HIS USE OF ALL CAPS STILL AMUSES ME GREATLY.

@Evie Havok: This really bugs me. I don't feel it's really very different from calling someone too thin. Just because someone has different problems than you do doesn't make them any less real. From where you're sitting it may look like bullshit, but let me tell you, being pretty or rich have their own set of problems, and the standard reaction is the one you just stated "oh, boo-hoo!" Just because they are things society tells you to aspire to doesn't mean that it's a picnic once you're there.

@Evie Havok: I felt like the mistaken assumption of her statement was that average or unattractive girls are afforded huge amounts of respect and are always listened to and taken seriously. I'll buy that there are problems that come exclusively with being pretty, but I'm fairly certain that study after study has shown that attractive people tend to do better in every area. This doesn't mean that you can't live a good life if you're not a flawless physical specimen, but unearned privilege is always going to be the cause of resentment. Rightfully so, in my opinion.
I think Uma Thurman has pretty girl discrimination mixed up with plain old sexism.

@Evie Havok: I think Uma needs to STFU. "Pretty girls get self-conscious because they're constantly getting comments about how they look and they end up getting very shy or actually awkward." ... But this has NEVER happened to any ugly girls. This might have been legitimate commentary if it were framed in how we feel entitled to judge all women's bodies-- but saying how hard it is being pretty doesn't get a bit of sympathy from me.
