I wouldn't to Michelle to save American fashion; she is what American fashion has become, only Vogue hasn't quite realized it.

But what's the net impact here really going to be for your average taxpayer? The vast majority of Americans can't even afford to devote much thought to designer labels, let alone stock their wardrobes with them. We, the people, have always had cheaper clothes than the wealthy high-fashion upper echelon. Hell, have you seen the prices at J. Crew lately?
Here at Jezebel, we are a varied and aware set. We're multifaceted with different interests. One of these interests is fashion, and Dodai (and let's not forget Sadie!) writes beautifully on the topic. And, I mean, we definitely see fashion from a different vantage point--I think Jezebel does a great job portraying what it's like across the industry, from models to Marshall's, from Kmart to Kors. But I think this may overestimate Michelle Obama's influence on the way this nation sees clothing and labels. For me, even J. Crew and Banana Republic are absolutely inaccessible. For many parts of this country, The Gap is still an aspirational label.
Michelle Obama happens to be well-dressed and very attractive; she pulls it off sensibly and with great taste. But I don't think she's going to revolutionize anything.

FACT: Michelle Obama is very intelligent, passionate, and educated.
I feel like we are doing her a disservice, talking all fashion all the time when it comes to Michelle. First Ladies in the past have had important causes to champion, even without her credentials behind them, and I doubt very much that Michelle will be any different.
That said, I do agree that her disregard for labels is refreshing and fabulous and good for people. It just bugs me that most articles about Michelle Obama are about what she wears, I guess. She is so much cooler than that.

If you don't understand the love for Michelle Obama "round these parts" I think you're on the wrong website.

Very rude perhaps, but not racist. Don't go throwing around allegations against someone you don't know.
Bye-bye, vowels.

Designer labels, luxury items, etc... I don't see the worth in them. Doesn't mean you have to dress scruffy, but 150 dollars in a dress? that's like my absolute limit!

The most important thing is to look for quality. It can be found at Target, at Eddie Bauer, at T.J. Maxx. Shop the expensive stores to educate yourself, and then try to replicate it at a lower price.

I also giggle every time I see a huge house, because my first two thoughts are "oh GOD. Someone has to clean that beast" and "ouch. Heating bills." And then I remember to ooh and aah about how pretty it is.
I think this is the result of being the daughter of a cheapskate airline pilot (we've had the same disposable paint brushes for literally 15 years. Apparently they're still usable, although I disagree).
