as a new orleanian, i actually dont know how i feel about any of this. im pretty burnt out and bitter as far as "the recovery" goes. and it has A LOT to do with our mayor and our city council and our communities and what the recovery conversation has turned into as a whole. and a lot of it involves some seriously local politics and stresses on certain values that i am just sick of. and obama can't change that. really, i do see this visit as a nice moment to maybe rekindle some energy and discussion, but frankly (and with a lot of resignation i say this) we are broken and we are staying broken. and i fucking hate steve scalise. and bobby jindal. he's spent his entire time in office so far gutting social services to the poor- both in new orleans and around the state- so he has very little of my respect at this point. oh, and, if the levees arent fixed and coastal restoration isn't taken seriously, new orleans isnt going to exist in 15 years, so whatever, right? (once again- i am burnt out and bitter and tired of talking about my city's problems. but they ain't going anywhere.) sigh. #barackobama

@southernbitch: I feel the same way. I love this city and state because it is home but sometimes I wonder how much longer I can take it. I'm a young renter and I want to be an old woman on my porch one day, in South Louisiana. All the shit you mentioned makes it seem impossible. After Katrina and Rita and Gustav, and then Ike that just passed by and places flooded, it seems pointless. I want Louisiana to be a better place. I want to be around my family. I don't want to be another part of the brain drain. At this point, all these wishes are running into reality of our city and state situations and losing. #barackobama

@salami?: yeah, i'm pretty much going to be part of the brain drain. i'm making plans to move in a year. i just can't stay. between the violence (people getting shot in the head on my street!), the blatant racism, the emphasis on trickle down economics, the failure of local leaders to engage with huge swaths of electorates on a meaningful level, the stupid-ass 200 million dollar MALL we are using DISASTER RECOVERY FUNDS to build, the fact that the levees are just back to the same level with no commitment to strengthen them, the crumbling public schools, etc.... as much as a love this place, i cannot build my life here. it's too tenuous of a place, and it's hard to think about my future when i can't even imagine a future for my physical environment and city. depressing. #barackobama

A few months ago I saw a documentary on lost pets in New Orleans after Katrina. I guess it sounds trivial compared to the rest of the Katrina aftermath, but seeing the way the government, non-profit, and volunteer groups all interacted with each other (not well) helped me understand the incompetent handling of Katrina. #barackobama

@victoriasauce: I understand that you're being hyperbolic, but come on. New Orleans isn't some little thing- this is a major American city that is still a mess 4 years after the storm, and Obama campaigned that he was going to help rehabilitate it. #barackobama

I completely agree that something more substantial than a drive-by is called for, especially being that it's his first visit to the city as president. When he came into office, he inherited a lot of mess and breakage, so maybe this is just one area that's not high-profile enough to merit his attention yet? I call BS on that. NOLA folks have been consistently dismissed for 4 years, and it's shameful. #barackobama

Why does it seem with every move he makes, the focus is on what Obama should be doing and what's he's doing isn't enough. Granted, perhaps he should be spending more time in NOLA, and hopefully this will be the first of many such visits. But I'd rather see these critics discuss what they intend to do to help Obama make the most of his time there and help him get the information he needs to make decisions and effect action. #barackobama

@erinna: It is far easier to throw stones, than to reach out a hand. What people forget is, he doesn't run the government, and certainly doesn't run it by himself. Washington, D.C. is just chock full of people who operate the country day-to-day. #barackobama
