@futuremouse: Sebelius is the charm to banish unwanted germs. I believe you learn it in your third year. The house elves cast it best, though they hate to get pigeonholed as only disinfectors.
People who oppose abortion have a deficit of attention (except for scripture study), so they must be reminded of things often, lest they become confused and vociferous.
Sorry, as a pediatric cancer survivor who has been denied private insurance because I am a pediatric cancer survivor ("pre-existing condition: osteosarcoma" is what was on the rejection letter, so it was specifically for the cancer, though other cited my depression or BMI) - I say SCREW PRIVATE INSURANCE COMPANIES.
@socktree: I was rejected from every single insurance company I applied to in the last two months because I take medication for depression. They'll use any excuse. It's criminal - or at least, it should be.
@socktree: My brother is a pediatric cancer survivor too. The experience of BOTH my parents insurance companies being so horrible during his treatment (trying to say that the treatments the doctors said he needed to save his life were not what he needed, etc etc) as well as the fact that my brother is now pretty much un-insurable as an adult has all informed my current feelings on healthcare.
What are thos feelings? We can't get the public option quickly enough.
@applejuice: Oh, and for the record - I live in the UK now where we have the NHS and, contrary to what the right wing crazies are saying, if the doctor says you need a treatment you get a treatment. I know people who waited for longer on lists in the US for treatments paid for by their private insurance than I have ever waited here.
@applejuice: Interestngly enough, I was under Tricare, which is the military insurance and treated in a military/VA hospital (more or less "socialized" health care) and the only thing my parents paid for during my year in the hospital? Not the 10 surgeries, not the constant painkillers - the food. The food is the only thing they paid for, and never once was I denied or delayed treatment.
I know that the reform won't give us a NHS-type system but it's a damn good step forward.
I dont understand the argument over the public option. Some say you cant have it becuase it would compete with private insurance and put them out of business? Good, f them! Make your business better and then you wont go out of business but I really resent that the argument has come down to how can we reform health care and still keep health insurance companies in business?
As i said before, want to see a death panel, look at an insurance company. They have a legal fiduciary duty to their shareholders first, not the policy holder! Their main purpose in being is to make a profit, not exactly the people I want holding the strings on my health care.
We already pay for uninsured people, lets do it in a way that makes sense!
@youbehim: Yeah, I have found that I have to turn off the news to make myself feel better. Also I might just move to another country if it doesn't happen soon.
@youbehim: Sadly, it doesn't just look that way. It isn't a debate, it's a circus.
Free speech, to far too many folks, means shouting down your opponent, not expressing your sentiments via civil dialogue, and evaluation based on reason.
@Jack_Burton: That is what infuriates me about Fox news, they scream their way to the top of an arugment. Then gloat about how they won.
I am also so sick of everyone defending their views by saying, "Well, they're the number 1 most listened to talk radio show in the country." You know why? Because it's the only thing on in the morning, their competition is 1010Winds.
This whole health care fiasco just shows people how ill informed the majority of our country is.
WE were ready for change...we just have to wait until the rest of America is too. Sadly, I know this won't happen until the baby boomers go away along with our current school system.
you know, i was sitting about the other day just absolutely baffled by the opposition to american health care reform.
i can't imagine anywhere else in the world where the following could take place:
"hey! you want some free or at the very least affordable and useful health care?!"
"Hell no, asshole!"
I hate that the administration is allowing abstract speculation about abortion to distract from the much wider issue of things like, oh I don't know, people with cancer.
Not that I don't think abortion should be covered, because I do. But this is fundamentally a stupid, irrelevant argument and the news networks are doing what they usually do: serving themselves rather than the American people.
@Ailatan: I think I was listening yesterday to NPR when an attendee of a rally in MN said that Obama needed to re-mobilize the base that got him elected (i.e. us). I couldn't agree more. Give us a plan, give us an agenda, we'll get it done.
@WashingMyHair: How true is that. But I guess letting undocumented immigrants die untreated in the parking lots of our hospitals is something they're willing to settle for.
I hope I never understand how people like this are able to sleep at night.

It would be silly to cover this for what it is: Health Care, that's way too reasonable.
