Doesn't "sob story" generally apply to a melodramatic story told only to generate sympathy or pity? I've only ever heard it used with a negative connotation. Kind of a weird way to name this post.
@Suzi: 1) I agree with Suzi. A rather frivolous title for such a profoundly important story.
2)but thanks for postings stories about stories like this. And everybody: read the international news, ok? Lots of it. The NY Times international version, The Guardian, CNN (or CNN International), whatever. Make sure half of what you read in the news is about that world out there outside America. Because if you don't, Sarah Palin just might be our next president.
There was a fascinating, depressing article in the New Yorker earlier this year that touched on this problem--young Muslim men disappearing after being taken into custody by Indian police, only to later turn up dead (if turning up at all). Really horrible stuff.
this picture is a reminder of how little I know of the world. With those freckles, and red hair, she looks like she could be my cousin, or a Weasley. I never would have placed her in Kashmir.
I had a very illuminating conversation with a co-worker from Sudan. We talked about how, in the US, at least among middle and upper income white Americans, people are told from a young age to trust the police, the policeman is your friend, there to help, keep the peace, etc.
Even if you slow down for a traffic cop, or you're wary of store security, you're probably never going to feel the sheer terror that lots of people around the world reflexively feel whenever they see the police on patrol.
Tears of sadness, and probably deep frustration and anger too.
@KLondike5: I was JUST (literally just, 5 seconds ago) having this conversation with a coworker that there are so many places in the world we would love to see, but there is absolutely no way either of us would be willing to go somewhere where the authorities can't be trusted.
It's so easy to assume that in another country if you're mugged or something of yours it stolen that you can count on law enforcement like we can here, when in places like this you straight up cannot since the police regularly do shady things, accept bribes, etc. What a shame.
Oh my god. Imagine being 16 y/o with two babies (one a newborn) in a very dangerous place, your husband has been taken away and being left with the memory of him being tortured. Absolutely terrifying. Bon courage, madame!
@sybann: Well, in religion's defense, it's not its fault. We seem to always find ways and reasons to hate and kill each other (witness Stalin), whether or not we drag God's (gods') name(s) into it.
I would say: Fuck people who abuse God's (gods') name(s), and call it faith. God would have nothing to do with this. Oy, that poor woman, her poor children, her poor, poor husband.
I was trying to explain to my nephew this weekend how in different countries governments/gangs/etc. can take your family, kick you out of your house, kill your husband, burn your crops and beat you for no reason other than they want to. I don't think he can conceptualize it because we have it so good here. Hell, I can hardly conceptualize it.

politics and ideology aside, children are so vulnerable and so many all over the
world have to endure such suffering. It's good to remember how lucky I am.
