@femme-bot: You've got to get those little test-tube thingies full of candy-flavored liquor. Chuck a couple of those in your purse and pour 'em into your soda once the lights go down (my personal favorite recipe is two tubes of Mango in one half-full bottle of Sprite Zero). Tasty and stout.

@the glamwich: Hah. I got though "Sex and the City" with a biiiig water bottle of vodka. It was the only way I could convince my man-friend to come with me.
@femme-bot: I told my mom I wouldn't see it with her unless we smuggled in booze. I had to concede on it being a cosmo, but since my mother's version is about 10 times stronger and 100 times less sweet than any cosmo on the planet, it was still as win.
@ErinLovesYou: So true! Junior Mints are one of the healthiest candies around, fat-and-calorie wise. Even better than Raisinets or Three Musketeers. And zero cholesterol. Plus a serving is SEVENTEEN Mints, which is awesome, and a lot.
(I'm the world's biggest Junior Mint fan. I keep a jumbo box by my bed at all times. Seventeen (or an approximate handful) per day keep me from craving other, less harmless chocolaty treats, which has really improved my life, believe it or not. They're the best!)
@girlscoutcookie is back from hiatus: I rarely have it but I am a big Junior Mint fan. Probably because it is so minty I never in my life could eat 17 in one sitting. I love candies that pretty much require me to have portion control because they have such a strong taste.
One time I was in line at the movie theater concessions and the lady in front of me says to the worker, "Yeah... can I get extra grease on my popcorn?"
Oh great. Next you're gonna tell me that McDonald's double quarter pounders are bad for my health, and drinking a 12 pack for supper isn't good for my liver.
Listen, Science; If I've had a rough day, and all I want to do is eat Buncha Crunch and popcorn for dinner while watching an impossibly good-looking man fall for an impossibly good-looking and quirky woman on a ridiculously large screen inches from my face, then that is exactly what I'll do. So you can just shut it with your "scientific studies," because you DO NOT CROSS A SUGARBAKER WOMAN!

@Mary McCarthyite: You go girl! In high school, I worked for the movie theater chain owned by Viacom's Sumner Redstone. As a concession worker, we had to refill the popcorn bins and "butter" machines. The industrial tubs we poured into the "butter" dispensers were labled "Durkee Flavor-All". In addition to that crap, the popcorn was sprinkled with "Durkee Flavor Seasoning".
I haven't eaten movie theater popcorn since 1982 and I never will. I either make it at home and use REAL organic butter, or I don't eat it.
@Mary McCarthyite: That's why air popped at home is so much better for you. They're not air popping plain popcorn at the theater. I'm going to start making my own and smuggling it in.
What gets me is that air popping pop corn is not rocket science. They could very well offer that at the theater as an alternative.
@Mary McCarthyite: I stopped eating the microwavable popcorn (which wasn't particularly great anyway, but in some of my friends' houses, there wasn't much else to eat) because I found out that butter flavouring is giving the factory workers lung diseases. And causing deaths. Blech.
Next time you're home sick and watching Nickelodeon (I kno you do it too), don't mute the commercials. It's obscene how junk food is marketed to kids - you'd think it was toy commercials. The kids i've worked with treat these high-HFCS, novelty snacks like special treats to get when Mom gives in and they totally fetishize them in their kid play way. A fruit rollup isn't just mushed leathery fruit to a kid, it's a reward, a game, a culture unto itself, a game and a toy. Most snack companies have websites with games and log-ins so you can track your progress or even build loyalty by keeping a Tomagachi-like pet on the site.
I say we stop marketing junk food before 4 pm and sell in plain packaging, and stop the toy tie-ins. #junkfoodadvertising
More truth in advertising would certainly be helpful when it comes to marketing stuff to kids. There was a show back in the 80's on HBO that broke down all the deceptive things they do in commercials, from toy ads, to picking individual corn flakes, etc. And it was for kids. And it really does help break that sort of automatic "want" that commercials tend to instigate.
I find our whole system incredibly screwed up with this anyway. Everyone is freaking out about childhood obesity, but doing nothing about nutrition or getting more activity into the school day. We bombard kids with sugary, salty, high calorie foods aimed at them...and then go, but don't eat it ever! It's no wonder so many people end up with dysfunctional relationships with food. And don't even get me started on people who put kids on the same calorie restricted diets as adults. You might as well say you don't want them to develop healthy brains.
The whole issue is really about A. making good food accessible to everyone B. making sure everyone is educated about nutrition C. not demonizing the occasional snack food or soft drink and D. teaching kids to be more skeptical of ads.
@tiredfairy: Uh, there are loads of people working on improving nutrition and increasing activity. The government gives loads of grants for things like walking school buses and better school meals. #junkfoodadvertising
@clevernamehere: That's good to know. You almost never hear about it, with all the obesity crisis news. And I didn't really mean to suggest no one is trying, but it doesn't seem to be that widespread. If you have links and articles, please share. I'd like to know more about what's being done. :} #junkfoodadvertising
