Baseball and cricket are as different as soccer and football. Baseball has commonality slightlywith rounders, as well as with games played in the field by Civil War soldiers. The Cooperstown story is no doubt highly romanticized, but I think it is highly disingenuous to claim baseball was stolen from England.

I think it's pretty well acknowledged that the whole Abner Doubleday stuff is crappity crap. But we like stories like that here.

Pittsfield, MA's 1791 Baseball Bylaw is the first written reference to baseball in the US, well before Doubleday allegedly invented the game in a field in 1839.

Jane Austen may have invented baseball, but I heard it was her who decided against truly promoting it as the next new fad because the game just isn't as fun without spitting tobacco and boatloads of 'roids. Austen loved her some beefcakes.
