I can't really vocalize very well what I'm trying to say - but there is definitely an inherent difference between, say, Nadya's approach to having children and the "normal" desire to become a parent.
I really liked this CC, though!

I'm not wild about the term, but I think it works better in this context than it usually does.

@jpolorolu: i've never lived on the west coast, but the places i've lived it's not exclusively used to refer to women either. the emphasis is on the couple doing the breeding. they (jointly) are breeders. unless g. gordon liddy has done some kind of study on the vernacular usage of this term, i'm not sure how he/she can really back up the assertion that this term is used to refer solely to women.

See, Greengrey? I like you and all, but I'm sick of being called a breeder. Are you sick of being named something you aren't, yet? I've given up on Jez almost entirely, you cant be a mom without judgment, and you can't be a slut without judgment. What good is being a feminist?
06/12/09
Not trying to gang up you, @greengrey (is not a star!): but you seem to have a problem with "breeders" (as it is so eloquently put) in general. Every post about motherhood you have something to negative to say. Whats the deal? I like to think of feminism as some kind of a sisterhood. Of course, you dont have to agree with every woman or every woman's choice, which I dont either, but c'mon.

@onehotmess: I don't like 90% (possibly more) of people. Take those 90% who breed and make another "population". 90% (or more) of which I'm not going to like. There are too many people. Too few parents ask themselves what's so great about their genes. That's why I'm not breeding, I may have some fantastic traits to pass on, but that doesn't beat out the general insanity that my family has. Not enough people think before they breed. So I'm always on the offensive with them. When they prove that themselves/their children are spectacular specimens, I'll be OK with them. For the record I don't think my parents should have bred.
It has nothing to do with misogyny. I treat men just as shitty. I wonder what would happen to this planet if every couple had 3 kids...

My understanding is that the term originated in the gay community to describe hetero couples with kids and to point out how annoying they can be. Wikipedia backs me up. [en.wikipedia.org])
I don't find it particularly offensive, though. I talk shit about things I don't like or respect all the time. And all this backlash about it being misogynistic, I don't get it. Men are referred to as breeders just as often as women. It has to do with reproducing, not bearing children.
It's possible that you really don't mean it in a derogatory way, but I find that hard to believe. Since it IS derogatory, just own up to that being your intent; if you don't mean it that way, I would suggest you stop using it.
