This makes me feel like a jerk for skipping my training this weekend for the half marathon I recently decided to run. No more excuses! If an 81-year-old lady can take fifty minutes OFF HER MARATHON TIME, I, Sequined, can sure as shit get off my ass and run around the block at some point in a weekend.
Off topic, but there's an 82 year old woman in my step aerobics class that could seriously kick my ass. She's in UNBELIEVABLY better shape than my lazy wine drinking ass.
@Crabby Cakes: Yes! There was a lady at my gym who would ROCK the cardio dance class I'd go to. I don't even remember her name, but she's on my list of role models for when I'm that age. Vitality is NOT strictly the specialty of youth.
have we clarified how she won the 80-90 year old division six years but is only 81? I'm still confused but it doesn't really matter- the woman ran a marathon at 81! i couldn't do that at 21!!
@linnyt: I just read the WSJ article. I think what the author meant was that she's won her age group's title for the past five years. So before she turned 80, it was the 75-79 year old group that she won.
@BeckySharper: Thank you! I'm hoping to eventually pare my time down enough to qualify to run in the Boston Marathon, but my finishing time was 5:36:38, and you have to be able to finish in less than 3:40 to be eligible.
@Cafezinha: Hey, the first one is the hardest. I'm thinking (dreaming? hoping?) of qualifying next time, too. I mean, if this lady shaved 50 minutes off her time, who's to say we can't?
@skittlbrau: Oh, my marathon was back in June, not New York. Though I want to run that one, too!
I felt decent after mine because after a quick visit to some friends to brag, I went right home and sat in an ice bath. It was excruciating, but I think it went a LONG way towards helping me actually be able to walk afterwards.
The worst part: I live on the third floor, with no elevator. Oh Christ, if I didn't hate those stairs before...
Since it was my first, my only goal was to train and finish. My best friend and I have a long history of setting outrageous goals, but never following through, so we decided that we would do this together as a pact to make good on our dreams.
I'm still trying to decide when I'll run another one. My husband is supposed to be assigned to Guam pretty soon, but we don't know exactly when, so I can't plan ahead very well. =(
@Cafezinha: That's what they say a first-timer's goal SHOULD be. To finish feeling well enough to consider doing another one at some point! After that, you can think about time.
Ohm, and I, too, have an intense love/hate relationship with ice baths...
@skittlbrau: It's really awful, but boy does it work! I've also heard those massage sticks or foam rollers are helpful - ever try one? I've got it on my Christmas list this year.
@RainbowBrite: I have the massage stick, and a little wheelie thing for my feet. I love them both. You try to take away my The Stick, and there will be a fight on your hands.
I just decided to train for my first half marathon (in June! wish me luck!), so now I have a role model and zero excuse not to work my butt off to make it.

It is pathetic that my 25 year old ass can't get 5 miles done without WANTING TO DIE.
mental note - get fat ass off couch.

Otherwise, she would have won the 80-90 division at 70, which doesn't seem quite fair. :)
